Job summary

Southland Industries is seeking a senior preconstruction professional to lead design-build and design-assist projects in the Tempe area. You will manage design schedules, develop conceptual designs for estimating, and oversee the financial aspects of design contracts to maintain profitability and cash flow.

You will coordinate with cross-functional teams, train staff, ensure QA/QC, and drive standards for engineering practices while supporting client relationships and project goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Science, or equivalent training and experience.
  • 6+ years of progressive engineering or construction management experience.
  • PE licensure preferred.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Autodesk products (Revit).
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team while meeting deadlines.
  • Outstanding project management skills.
  • Understanding of MEP calculations, design, building codes and costs.
  • Ability to develop design tasks and distribute among the design team.

Responsibilities

  • Manages design-build and design-assist projects, ensuring quality and schedule adherence.
  • Develops and maintains client relationships and coordinates with cross-functional teams.
  • Communicates goals and schedules with business development, engineering, estimating, and construction PMs; assesses risk.
  • Manages financial aspects of design contracts to maintain profitability and cash flow.
  • Coordinates engineering resources to develop conceptual designs for estimating.
  • Develops standards and procedures for the engineering department; trains staff.
  • Maintains document control in compliance with requirements and standards.
  • Oversees QA/QC processes in design and coordination.
  • Plans and coordinates on-site field surveys to gather data.
  • Assists in early procurement leveling as required.

Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for the preconstruction process of design-buildand design-assist projects. Manages project design and detailing schedule, monitors design development and detailing progress, and manages the financial aspects of the design contract to deliver high-quality projects within the prescribedtime framesand costs.

Position Details
  • Manageslarger orseveral smallerdesign-build and design assist projects. Ensures the delivery of high-quality projects within the prescribedtime frames.
  • Develops andmaintainsclient relationships. Coordinates with cross-functional teams, including other discipline contractors and architects.
  • Communicates and manages project goals and schedules with business development, engineering, estimating, and construction project management.Identifiesand assesses risk in all project phases andparticipatesincreationof construction schedules to ensure alignment.
  • Manages all financial aspects of the design contracts (costs,billingsand collections) tomaintainprofitability goals and positive cash flow whilemaintaininga positive client relationship.
  • Manages cost impact studies or design optimization efforts and works with Operations or design project management for pricing. Coordinates engineering resources to develop conceptual designs to supportestimating. Provides engineering support to business development teams during pursuit of projects.
  • Participates in the development of standards, methods,processesand procedures for the engineering department. Trains less experienced team members and ensures compliance with engineering standards, codes,specificationsand design instruction.
  • Develops andmaintainsdocument control, ensuring compliance with applicable requirements and standards.
  • Manages the design and/or coordination ofQA/QC process.
  • Plans and coordinates on-site field surveys to collect and deliver design and engineering data.
  • Assistsin early procurement leveling efforts as required by the project.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Science, or equivalent technical training and related experience
  • 6+ years of progressive engineering or construction management experience
  • PE licensure preferred
  • Outstanding organizational skills and time management skills
  • Excellent analytical and technical writing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Advanced computerproficiency, including MS Office and familiarity with Autodesk Products and Revit
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment while adhering to project deadlines
  • Outstanding project management skills
  • Ability to efficiently review and critique construction documents
  • Understanding of MEP calculations and design, building codes and standards, and MEP system costs
  • Ability to develop design tasks and distribute amongst the design team
