Job summary

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Planning Division is seeking a Design Project Manager to plan, coordinate, and implement capital park improvements across the MPRB system, ensuring design excellence, community engagement, and equity in outcomes.

This full-time role requires leadership of multi-disciplinary design and construction activities, budget oversight, and collaboration across departments to meet park needs and advance universal access.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • 4+ years public or park-related design and/or engineering experience.
  • 6+ years in construction project management.
  • 4+ years community engagement in a public setting.
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to 10 years in a similar role.

Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for complete project design and management of capital projects.
  • Provide design leadership to ensure projects meet park needs and equity goals.
  • Collaborate across departments and partnerships to optimize citizen services.
  • Prepare and administer project budgets and seek outside funding.

Job description

The MPRB's Planning Division is seeking a Design Project Manager to plan, coordinate, and implement capital park improvements in the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board system. Provide design project management activities that meet the park and recreation needs of diverse communities and ensure race equity, gender inclusion and universal access.

Employee will be eligible to request a teleworking arrangement (up to two days per week of remote work) after 6 months of continuous regular employment and a satisfactory performance record.

  • Overall responsibility for complete project design and project management activities for capital projects that ensure alignment with the MPRB Comprehensive and Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan. This work requires the shaping and framing of ideas into projects which includes managing and developing community and organizational engagement, renderings, cost estimates, specifications, construction drawings, construction management, project budget management, completing project close-out activities, and other necessary activities for completion of projects.
  • Provide design and project leadership with a high degree of competence and sound judgment so the development and implementation of projects fully support the current and future needs of the MPRB.
  • Design and project management in a collaborative environment including working across department lines and forming partnerships that foster better citizen services, eliminate barriers to achieving results, build alliances with community and staff, and take full advantage of available resources.
  • Prepare and administer project budgets and corresponding revenue, including seeking and securing outside funding.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other agencies and entities neighboring MPRB property to further the objectives of the MPRB.
  • AssistMPRBin identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
Need To Have:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, or closely related field.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in public or park-related design and/or engineering: at least four (4) years.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in all phases of construction project management: at least six (6) years.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in community engagement in a public setting: at least four (4) years.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to ten (10) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the essential duties.
Nice To Have:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, or closely related field.
  • State licensure in either landscape architecture, civil engineering, or architecture.
  • Experience working in a related role in a government agency.
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of state-of-the-art park design and urban design.
  • Knowledge of the modern principles and best practices of design and construction practices.
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary construction and site plan requirements.
  • Competency with computers and software applications used in business settings and planning work (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, AutoCAD, GIS, workflow management software systems.)
  • Knowledge of the contemporary principles and best practices of contract management and supervision.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

This is a full-time civil service position.

  • We review your minimum qualifications.
  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
  • We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
