Job summary

WSP is seeking a Design Manager for the SDF Roads team to lead the technical delivery of moderately complex projects in the London & South East region. You will manage design teams, coordinate stakeholders, and ensure deliverables meet client requirements and WSP procedures.

You will guide risk management, plan project lifecycles, watch cost/quality/time targets, and mentor colleagues while promoting health and safety and CDM compliance.

Qualifications

  • University degree in civil engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated status preferred but not essential.
  • Experience on large, technically complex multi-disciplinary civil projects.
  • Understanding of client and business needs with focus on margin & contract compliance.
  • Knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., NEC) is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Job Description

As a Design Manager in the SDF (Service Delivery Framework) Roads team you will lead the technical delivery of moderately complex projects across the Roads business in the London & South East region. You will manage and coordinate technical design teams, ensuring high‑quality deliverables and compliance with WSP procedures and client requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Take ownership for the successful delivery of multi‑disciplinary engineering projects on the framework.
  • Manage and coordinate design teams and effectively communicate with all parties.
  • Identify and manage design risks.
  • Plan and monitor the performance of projects throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure all deliverables and milestones are achieved to cost/quality/time targets.
  • Provide a Check/Review role for technical work to meet WSP's quality management requirements.
  • Act as a role model, line manager and mentor for other staff within the Roads team.
  • Champion excellent health and safety practice, including safety in design, site visit safety and compliance with CDM regulations.
  • Respond to client directions in a professional and customer‑focused manner and develop and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • A university degree relevant to civil engineering, construction, design or related discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Status (MICE, MCIHT or equivalent) or relevant demonstrable experience (preferred but not essential).
  • Experience of large, technically complex multi‑disciplinary civil engineering projects.
  • Understanding of client and business needs with a focus on achieving margin and contract compliance.
  • Knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., NEC) and processes (preferred but not essential).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate successful collaboration to solve complex problems.
