Job summary

WSP invites applications for a Senior Engineer – Drainage Design (Roads, Active Travel, Major Civil Engineering). The role supports the London & South East region with offices in Cambridge, Southampton and other locations.

The successful candidate will lead drainage design, manage technical input and deliver design packages across feasibility to detailed design. You will apply DMRB standards, SuDs, and hydraulic modelling tools while guiding junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • CEng or IEng status or near.
  • Postgraduate experience in surface water drainage for major road schemes.
  • Strong knowledge of drainage principles, DMRB and SuDs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and ArcGIS.
  • Experience with drainage design software (Microdrainage, Causeway Flow).
  • Familiarity with InfoWorks ICM, FloodModeller, TuFlow, HEC-RAS/HMS.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high‑quality engineering services with an integrated team.
  • Provide technical input to cross‑sector project teams.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate outputs to clients.
  • Develop the Roads and drainage team's capabilities.
  • Design drainage for roads, public transport and active travel projects incl. feasibility to detailed design.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE and QA standards.

Job description

Senior Engineer – Drainage Design (Roads, Active Travel, Major Civil Engineering)

WSP are seeking an enthusiastic and talented Senior Engineer with extensive postgraduate experience in the drainage design for Roads, Active Travel and Major Civil Engineering schemes. This role is part of our high‑performing team based in the London & South East region.

Locations include Cambridge, London (Westferry Circus), Basingstoke, Guildford and Southampton offices.

Responsibilities
  • Work as part of an integrated team to deliver high‑quality engineering services for our clients and coordinate engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages.
  • Provide technical input to our cross‑sector multidisciplinary internal project teams supporting the delivery of transportation, commercial/residential development and environmental infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare technical reports and communicate outputs to our clients.
  • Further develop and broaden the technical capacity of the Roads and drainage team.
  • Technical input and design on roads, public transport and active travel projects, including:
    • Undertaking road drainage systems and flood risk management measures designs using relevant industry‑standard software for feasibility, concept and detailed design stages.
    • Application of the DMRB, CIRIA and other relevant standards.
    • Developing and delivering design solutions, including applications for departures and relaxations from standards and ensuring all requisite approvals and consents are secured for projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • Hold CEng or IEng status with a professional institute or be close to achieving a qualification.
  • Capability of working to tight project deadlines, working comfortably under pressure and having an open and honest approach.
  • Significant postgraduate experience in undertaking outline and detailed design and delivery of surface water drainage systems and flood risk management measures for major national road development projects and other major civil engineering infrastructures.
  • Excellent working knowledge and understanding of drainage principles, DMRB standards and guidelines, SuDs and hydraulic modelling.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and ArcGIS software.
  • Experience with drainage design and flood modelling software such as Microdrainage & Causeway Flow.
  • Experience with other related software such as InfoWorks ICM, FloodModeller, TuFlow, HEC‑RAS (1d/2d) and HEC‑HMS would be beneficial.
