We are seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead Design & Engineering (D&E) execution for offsite manufacturing, prefabrication, and modular construction projects. This role will oversee multidisciplinary design teams and ensure the delivery of high-quality, constructible, fabrication-ready design packages that meet project specifications, budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
The Design Manager will serve as the primary coordination point between design, engineering, manufacturing, procurement, operations, and installation teams, managing projects from initial planning through design approvals, production release, and field installation support.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary Design & Engineering activities across architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, prefabrication, manufacturing, and installation teams.
- Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, resource plans, priorities, and deliverables to ensure timely and cost-effective execution.
- Oversee the preparation and review of BIM models, Revit models, technical drawings, shop drawings, specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and fabrication documentation.
- Ensure designs meet project specifications, contractual requirements, applicable building codes, regulatory standards, and quality expectations.
- Coordinate with engineers, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure design intent aligns with manufacturability, constructability, Lean principles, and industry best practices.
- Lead design reviews, value engineering initiatives, constructability assessments, and prefabrication optimization efforts to reduce waste and improve project outcomes.
- Manage design coordination and quality assurance processes, identifying and resolving model clashes and design discrepancies before production release.
- Maintain design deliverables trackers covering models, submittals, approvals, shop drawings, fabrication packages, milestones, risks, and outstanding issues.
- Monitor project progress, manage design changes and risks, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and provide regular updates to leadership.
- Support the implementation and effective use of BIM, Revit, AutoCAD, and other digital design and coordination tools.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, operations, and construction teams to facilitate smooth transitions from design development to production and installation.
- Contribute to proposals, estimates, contract reviews, project documentation, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support team development, cross-functional collaboration, accountability, and adherence to safety, quality, and sustainability standards.
- Travel approximately 15–20% to manufacturing facilities, project sites, vendor facilities, and other locations as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in design project management within construction, prefabrication, modular/offsite manufacturing, design-build, or the AEC industry.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary design or engineering teams and managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of BIM processes, Revit, AutoCAD, technical drawings, design coordination, and fabrication-ready documentation.
- Experience managing project schedules, budgets, resources, design deliverables, approvals, and stakeholder expectations.
- Understanding of building codes, safety standards, constructability, quality assurance, and Lean design or manufacturing principles.
- Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in offsite construction, modular systems, prefabrication, industrial manufacturing, data centers, power and energy, or other engineered-product environments.
- Experience coordinating design deliverables through production release and supporting manufacturing and field installation.
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and prefabrication or manufacturing software.
- Professional credentials such as PE, RA, PMP, or LEED certification.
- Experience implementing process improvements and advanced digital modeling technologies.
- Work across design, engineering, manufacturing, and construction functions.
- Travel approximately 15–20% to support project execution, manufacturing coordination, and installation activities.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a hands-on design leader who combines strong technical knowledge with project management expertise. They should be able to coordinate complex, multidisciplinary design activities, resolve design and constructability challenges, and ensure that engineering deliverables are accurate, approved, and ready for manufacturing and installation.
