When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

As a Design Engineering Specialist for the Hydraulic Mining Shovels (HMS) product team, you’ll be at the forefront of machine control design and development. In this position, you will maximize machine performance through hydraulic controls and help architect the multigenerational project plan for HMS control strategies. You will build the vision for HMS hydraulic machine controls. This position resides within the Hydraulic Mining Shovel Engineering team in Tucson, AZ.

What you will do:

  • Hydraulic Optimization for HMS – Determine hydraulic layouts and pump allocation strategies for increased machine performance, and implement the designs for NPI.
  • Control Strategy – Design and own the control strategy for HMS. Utilize commonality and build a multigenerational plan for HMS controls.
  • Control Algorithm Development – Provide the control algorithms for NPI machines. Maintain the controls algorithms for current production machines and make updates if issues arise from the field.
  • Field support – Provide controls support for the field as needed.
  • Evaluate options – Compare new designs against current ones, utilizing virtual product development (VPD) and field data.
  • Resource Coordination – The Design Engineering Specialist role does not include supervisory duties over direct reports. Instead, you will manage resources allocated to your program from various supporting organizations.
  • Collaboration and Decision Making – Foster collaboration and cooperation among teams like hydraulic systems, ensuring adequate input and timely decision-making to resolve issues according to program timelines.
  • Communication – Convey complex control changes to the management team. This role requires that the incumbent increases understanding of the business, the business aspects of technology, and the customers’ business, and needs.
  • Quantifying – Identify the conditions that are needed to simulate real-life hydraulic mining shovel operations. Update the simulation complexity depending on the needs of the study.

What skills you will have:

Technical Excellence: Strong technical leadership skills with extensive experience in the performance and application of mining equipment or excavators. Extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications, electro-hydraulic system design and/or test, and control theory.

Engineering Tools: Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized engineering programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test design concepts using tools like Dynasty, MATLAB, Rocks3D, C-Link, Python.

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of performance problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, and techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations. Track record of developing innovative technical solutions and the ability to gain buy-in for implementation from all levels of the organization.

Effective Communications: Strong communication, leadership, project management, and business management skills. Direct work with internal process partners, suppliers, customers, and dealers requires the incumbent to demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise.

Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.

Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.
