Job Title: Design Engineer – Pipe Stress & Subsystem Design
Location: Remote USA
Client: Confidential (Aerospace Sector)
Overview
We are hiring an experienced Design Engineer to support the design and analysis of fluid subsystems for one of our leading aerospace clients. The focus of this role will be pipe stress analysis and component-level system design in compliance with client specifications. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to next-generation spaceflight test infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Pipe Stress Analysis
- Develop and complete pipe stress models using CAESAR II or AutoPIPE, utilizing the client-supplied 3D model.
- Identify support locations and calculate load expectations at those points.
- Recommend routing modifications or support optimization to improve structural performance and reduce complexity.
- Deliver completed stress model with documentation for client review.
- Component Specification
- Select and specify valves, pumps, instrumentation, and other components based on system needs and P&ID tags.
- Document all selected components in FCRE-21771 for client review.
- Use the Preferred Component Supplier List, and coordinate with the client for exceptions or supplier contact information.
- Consider cost and lead time when making selections; preliminary quotes may be requested.
- P&ID Development
- Provide redlines for process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) as part of an iterative design process.
- Collaborate with the client to ensure P&ID updates are fully integrated into their AutoCAD system.
- 3D Model Coordination
- While the client retains ownership of the 3D modeling effort, work closely with their design team to ensure system integrity and compatibility.
- Provide guidance and markups related to stress concerns and component layout within the 3D environment.
- HAZOP Leadership
- Schedule, lead, and document Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs) for assigned systems.
- Capture results in CMRE-14298 and coordinate with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- HAZOPs may be remote and span several days depending on system complexity.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in pipe stress analysis and system-level mechanical design.
- Proficiency with CAESAR II or AutoPIPE software.
- Familiarity with aerospace, industrial, or cryogenic system environments preferred. Experience delivering high volumes of liquid or gas required
- Significant expertise with piping codes and component selection best practices.
- Ability to interpret and redline P&IDs and coordinate with CAD/3D modelers.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead technical reviews such as HAZOPs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing high-spec infrastructure.
- Previous work with major aerospace contractors or government spaceflight programs.
- Experience working under formal design review processes and documentation frameworks (e.g., FCRE, CMRE).
