Job summary

Autocar, LLC in Hagerstown, IN is seeking a Design Engineer Mechanical to maintain BOMs and design chassis, powertrain, brake, cooling and suspension components for class 8 trucks. You will ensure parts are available, installable, and meet customer requirements and safety standards.

Responsibilities include creating layouts and assemblies in Unigraphics, validating parts with suppliers and government regulations, and coordinating with Analysis, Test and Manufacturing to implement cost reductions

Qualifications

• BSME or BSMT with 5 to 10 years related experience in Heavy Truck/Equipment or Terminal tractor design.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents and write routine reports.
• Familiar with FMVSS and government regulations as they relate to heavy vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical systems and components to meet customer requirements and project specifications.
• Specify, locate and validate chassis, powertrain, pneumatic and hydraulic components.
• Maintain bills of materials and documentation for day-to-day activities.
• Interface with Analysis, Test, and Manufacturing Engineering and with Product Regulation and Compliance staff.

• Review new quotes for technical approvals such as packaging, weights and compatibility.

Design Engineer Mechanical

Location: Hagerstown, IN

This position is responsible for maintaining the bills of materials in the mechanical systems and related modules such that they contain available, functional, installable parts that when assembled to the truck, provide a vehicle that meets the Customers' requirements and is safe to operate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

• Provide designs for mechanical systems and components in a variety of applications to meet customer requirements and project specifications. Apply fundamental engineering principles to mechanical components to ensure performance.
• Specify, locate and validate Chassis, Powertrain, Pneumatic and Hydraulic components which meet product design goals while complying with government regulations and supplier installation requirements. Work with off-site contract resources on custom work orders and product change request solutions
• Maintain bills of materials and documentation to support the day-to-day activities. Troubleshot mechanical systems installed on vehicles.
• Provide creative and technically feasible solutions for cost savings, service issues, and product improvements. Provide design solutions for customer work orders. Interface with materials and purchasing on new part design and sourcing.
• Interface with Analysis, Test, and Manufacturing Engineering to determine the most effective and economical use of materials and manufacturing processes. Interface with the Product Regulation and Compliance staff to design vehicles that meet government regulations, restrictions and codes.
• Liaison between engineering and production to train, instruct and resolve problems on new vehicle design installations
• Create layouts, parts, assemblies and assembly instructions using Unigraphics CAD design system
• Experience with design of vehicle air brake, cooling, powertrain and suspension systems on class 8 vehicles
• Familiar with compliances regulations on class 8 vehicles. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
• Review new customer quotes for technical approvals. These reviews may include but are not limited to: Component packaging, weight distributions, engine compatibility, axle application review, transmission start ability/grade ability and other component reviews.

Education and/or Experience

BSME or BSMT with 5 to 10 years related experience in Heavy Truck/Equipment or Terminal tractor design

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

Reasoning Ability

Computer Skills

A thorough working knowledge of:

• CAD based engineering design system, Unigraphics is preferred
