Job Description:

Job Title: Material Handling Design Engineer

Operating Company: Environmental Solutions Group (ESG) – Heil Environmental and Marathon plant

Location: Fort Payne, AL

Reports to: Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Common Body

Department: Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

Material Handling Design Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing efficient material handling systems within an automotive or heavy-duty manufacturing or distribution environment, utilizing their knowledge of various types of conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, robotics, and other material handling equipment to optimize material flow and minimize costs while adhering to safety standards. Key duties include conducting feasibility studies, creating detailed system layouts, selecting appropriate equipment, coordinating installation, and ensuring proper functionality through testing and troubleshooting.

This M/H Engineer role must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and must have a desire to work in a hands-on environment supporting the shop floor, Process MEs, Launch MEs, Tool room, and Operations management.

Individuals must demonstrate experience working within a Quality Management System (QMS) and have a working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles. Qualified candidates must have the ability to work with a manufacturing engineering mindset and the ability to read blueprints and CAD drawings, and use AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

Individuals must be self-starters and have a desire to promote an environment of continuous improvement throughout the organization. Experience in any or all of the following is desired: New Product Development (NPD), Electric Vehicles, flow manufacturing, metal fabrication processes, welding, assembly methodologies, or paint systems. Six Sigma green or black belt certification preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  • Develop comprehensive material handling system designs, including layout drawings, equipment selection, and material flow analysis.
  • Perform capacity calculations and cost estimations for proposed systems.
  • Collaborate with installation teams to ensure proper system installation and commissioning.
  • Develop and execute testing procedures to verify system performance and functionality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during implementation and post-installation phases.
  • Analyze ergonomic factors and safety considerations within the design process.
  • Create project timelines and budgets for material handling projects.
  • Manage project deliverables and ensure adherence to project specifications.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, and maintenance personnel.
  • Develop detailed system documentation including user manuals, operational procedures, and maintenance guidelines.
  • Provide training to plant personnel on proper operation and maintenance of new material handling systems.
  • Evaluate current material handling processes, considering innovations in materials and methods.
  • Recommend improvements to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective handling and packaging procedures.
  • Draft sketches, samples, and written analysis of proposed designs or improvements to handling systems, packaging, and other related elements.
  • Estimate material needs, costs, and timelines for proposed projects.
  • Facilitate installation, testing, and debugging phases of projects.
  • Provide Manufacturing Engineering support for the company and ongoing support for new products.
  • Oversee the justification, planning, and execution of individual capital equipment launch to scheduled timelines and within approved budgets.
  • Lead time studies of manufacturing processes to be included in the determination of manufacturing process line balancing.
  • Analyze production processes, work balance, production scheduling, capacity, and cell concepts to optimize crew distribution for efficiency, capacity, and lead-time.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Leadership teams.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Design or Manufacturing engineering and waste industries deploying customer-based solutions.
  • Strong understanding of material handling principles, including conveyor systems, robotics, and storage systems.
  • Experience with project management methodologies.
  • Strong technical background in the waste disposal and hauling industry.
  • Experience with metal fabrication, welding, assembly and/or paint systems/processes.
  • Ability to grasp new features/concepts quickly.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work towards a goal with minimal oversight from leadership.
  • Conduct load and capacity analysis for different material handling systems.
  • Prepare specifications and drawings for the procurement of material handling equipment.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for the delivery and installation of material handling equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations in the design and operation of material handling systems.
  • Maintain records and documentation related to material handling systems and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems related to material handling systems and equipment.
  • Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
  • Collaborate with quality control, engineering, and other departments to ensure that products meet quality and safety standards.
  • Conduct cost analysis and make recommendations for cost savings and process improvements.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Understand ethical behavior and business practices and ensure that own behavior and the behavior of others are consistent with these standards.
