Position Summary
Design Engineer II (Mechanical) reports to the Power Efficiency Solutions Senior Manager of Mechanical Engineering and Shared Lab Services. This person will lead Mechanical Design efforts for major New Product Development (NPD) projects, support sustainability engineering and provide direct lab support to include testing responsibilities – with focus on sound and vibration testing. In addition to these major areas of focus, where the engineer will own designs and testing responsibilities there will be opportunities to drive and support both Value Engineering and Value Analysis (VAVE) and Material Cost Out (MCO) opportunities. Through the design cycle and sustainability efforts, this person will leverage several software packages including Computer‑Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Sound Acquisition Software packages.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete electric motor and motor control housing mechanical designs, as well as components and accessories (castings, fabrications, shafts, end frames, mainframes, etc.) meeting market requirements and cost targets for New Product Development (NPD) & existing products.
- Analyze, model and test mechanical systems to minimize noise and vibrations while optimizing acoustic performance.
- Identify and execute cost‑saving opportunities of existing products and designs.
- Manage engineering work and priorities of the project team to align with milestones and stretch goals of the project schedule (Stage Gate Process).
- Coordinate drawing review, approval and release.
- Write specifications (design specifications, drafting instructions, product specifications).
- Select and integrate components into design, interacting with suppliers/vendors.
- Provide technical support to other departments.
- Create test plans, monitor tests, work with lab personnel, complete data analysis and summarize results.
- Be familiar with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Lean processes and material/component selection.
- Apply continuous improvement and demonstrate mastery in diverse settings.
- Possess experience with Product Part Approval Process (PPAP), supplier development and qualification.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and stay on track for required dates.
- Capture, curate and disseminate product knowledge within a cross‑functional environment.

- Maintain unquestionable business and personal integrity.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years of experience in mechanical design and development of industrial products or components, preferably with rotating machinery.
- Strong experience with CAD software (SolidWorks) and Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Projects).
- Depth and experience in the area of sound and vibration or acoustic optimization.
- Experience in root‑cause analysis using formal problem‑solving methods.
- Knowledge and experience in manufacturing processes such as castings, fabrications, forgings, sheet metal parts, bearings, and/or fasteners.
- Measure & testing capabilities; specifically vibration and noise testing, including modal analysis in labs and field environments, using microphones, sensors, modal hammers and data‑acquisition software.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, metric‑driven environment, effectively prioritize and execute tasks with a sense of urgency and manage work required per project plan.
- Strong communication skills (verbal, email, messaging, and video).
- Ability to develop and manage action plans for assigned technical projects (Project Management).
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minor in Physics or Acoustics; experience using an anechoic chamber for sound measurements and signal‑processing equipment for analysis of sound and vibrational data.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), using ANSYS or similar software.
- Experience with Sound Acquisition Software, similar to Siemens SimCenter.
- Familiarity using accelerometers or anemometers to collect data.
- Experience in the HVAC industry or consumer electronics industry.
- Knowledge of electric motors.
- Experience with LabVIEW or equivalent programs.
