Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering required.
• EIT certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Experience or internship in water/wastewater engineering is a plus.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, design, and coordination of water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
• Support the planning and design of water distribution systems, storage facilities, and treatment facilities.
• Prepare engineering calculations, design documents, and technical reports under guidance of senior staff.
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely delivery.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Design Engineer I – Water/Wastewater to join our Kentucky offices.

This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level civil engineering professional interested in developing their technical skills while supporting meaningful water and wastewater infrastructure projects. You will work alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to support the planning, design, and delivery of projects for public municipalities and private development clients.

What You’ll Do:

As a Design Engineer I – Water/Wastewater, you will assist with the planning, design, and coordination of water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Assignments may include water distribution and storage systems, booster pump stations, water treatment facilities, wastewater collection systems, wastewater pump stations, and wastewater treatment plants.

You will gain hands‑on experience preparing engineering calculations, design documents, technical reports, and project deliverables while collaborating with experienced engineers and project managers. This position offers opportunities to strengthen your technical knowledge, develop project coordination skills, and grow professionally within PRIME AE’s Water/Wastewater practice.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist with preparing engineering design plans, calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
• Support the planning and design of water distribution systems, storage facilities, pump stations, wastewater collection systems, and treatment facilities.
• Perform basic engineering calculations and design assignments using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other engineering software under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate technical assignments, project schedules, and deliverables.
• Assist with preparing project documentation, tracking progress, and maintaining established quality standards and deadlines.
• Participate in project meetings and support communication with clients, regulatory agencies, subconsultants, and internal teams.
• Assist with reviewing technical information, researching applicable design standards, and supporting project coordination and permitting activities.
• Identify and help resolve routine technical or project-related issues while receiving guidance and mentorship from senior engineering staff.

What You’ll Bring:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Previous internship, academic, or professional experience in water/wastewater engineering, municipal infrastructure, utility design, or related civil engineering projects preferred.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, with an interest in water distribution, wastewater collection, pump stations, and treatment infrastructure.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and attention‑to‑detail skills, with an ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• A proactive, team‑oriented approach with a willingness to learn, develop technical expertise, and grow professionally.
