Summary
An Amphenol Industrial Operations (AIO) Design Engineer will collaborate with the Design Engineering team on new and existing business opportunities across various markets. Responsibilities include sustaining legacy products, conducting research, and creating new product designs. The position reports to the Engineering Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage technical aspects of product design projects from ideation to launch, working closely with cross-functional teams using lean product development techniques.
- Work independently or collaboratively, demonstrating design expertise with plastics (injection molding) and metals (stamping and machining).
- Familiarity with connector manufacturing processes including progressive die stamping, injection molding, crimping, ultrasonic welding, and assembly.
- Create engineering documents using SolidWorks or CREO and ePDM, including BOMs, ECNs, and drawings.
- Develop test plans to meet product requirements and collaborate with test labs or perform tests to qualify designs.
- Ensure the accuracy and development of work performed, possibly working with outside engineering services or suppliers.
- Utilize creativity for product concept development and efficient knowledge acquisition.
- Engage in continuous education and skill development.
- Communicate with customers regarding documentation.
- Apply a continuous improvement mindset in work approaches.
- Follow safety policies and procedures to minimize risks, aiming for zero incidents.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and engineering methods set by management.
- Maintain workplace organization and cleanliness (5S).
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred) required; minimum 5 years of experience in connector product design. Knowledge of standards such as MIL-DTL-5015, MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-28482, UL, IEC, etc. Strong proficiency in Creo and SolidWorks. Connector testing experience, including tensile, cross-section, temperature rise, and Mil spec testing.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to use engineering analysis tools like finite element analysis, mold flow simulation, heat transfer, and electrical simulation.
- Strong decision-making skills with the ability to explain reasoning.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and documentation skills.
- Experience with project management platforms and ERP systems.
- Proficiency in creating drawings, tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Intermediate MS Office skills, especially Excel.
- Knowledge of Lean tools such as Root Cause Analysis, A3s, and Knowledge Reports.
- Prototyping experience, including 3D printing and contact prototyping.
- Fluency in technical concepts and English language.
