Job summary

Sheffield Forgings is seeking a Design Engineer to deliver robust forging designs from estimation through qualification and drive continuous improvement across supporting functions. You will liaise with customers, prepare technical drawings, design dies and tooling, and maintain records while supporting operations with manufacturing queries to meet KPI targets.

Requires minimum 5 years in extrusion/closed die forging design, understanding of forging and machining principles, and CAD (2D/3D);

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years designing extrusion/closed die forgings and tooling.
• Understanding of forging principles, methods and equipment.
• Understanding of machining principles and methods.
• Working knowledge of AS9100 would be advantageous.
• Knowledge of OEM technical requirements would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Liaise with customers from enquiry through final delivery to meet design requirements.
• Estimate forging design, weight, section, die sizes and method of manufacture for quotation.
• Engagement in the APQP process for onboarding new product and communicate design manufacturing requirements.
• Contract review
• Create and maintain technical documentation to support facilities operations
• Prepare drawings for product ranges ensuring all technical requirements are met
• Design and draw dies, tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges for manufacture
• Peer review drawings and submit to customer for approval
• Maintain departmental records for customer and internal drawings
• Prepare sampling details and issue instructions for development
• Support operations with manufacturing queries and OPEX
• Drive a continuous improvement philosophy
• Ensure housekeeping is maintained
• Any other ad-hoc duties as required

Main Purpose Of Job

The Design Engineer is responsible for the robust design of product within Sheffield Forgings from estimation through to product qualification and subsequent change management and improvement initiatives, and provide guidance and support to the necessary departments to enable the organisation to achieve its KPI's.

Key Tasks And Accountabilities

• Liaise with customer from receipt of enquiry through final delivery of product to ensure design meets customers' requirements
• Estimate forging design, weight, section, die and tool sizes and method of manufacture for product quotation
• Engagement in the sites APQP process for onboarding new product and communicate the design manufacturing requirements at all levels within the organisation
• Contract review
• Day-to-day co-ordination and creation of technical documentation necessary to support the facilities operational requirements
• Prepare drawings for all product ranges as required, ensuring all technical requirements are met
• Design and draw dies, tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges for manufacture
• Peer review technical drawings and submit relevant drawings to customer for approval
• Maintain departmental records to ensure both customer and internal drawings are kept up to date
• Prepare sampling details and issue instructions to relevant departments for development of product
• Support operations teams with manufacturing queries and the OPEX model.
• Drive a continuous improvement philosophy through the department
• Ensure departmental housekeeping is maintained to a high standard
• Any other ad-hoc duties as required

Qualifications
