Job description

We are seeking a Distribution Design Engineer in the Charlotte, Durham, Wilmington, and Greenville areas to support the design and modernization of electric utility distribution systems for a leading energy provider. This role offers the opportunity to work on overhead and underground power distribution projects while collaborating directly with utility clients, field personnel, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality design solutions.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in both office and field environments, possess strong engineering and design fundamentals, and have experience using CAD, GIS, and utility design tools. Recent engineering graduates with relevant internships, co-op experience, or project work are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform engineering design work for electric utility distribution projects, including overhead (OH), underground (UG), underground residential distribution (URD), make-ready, and street lighting initiatives.
• Develop detailed work packages and design deliverables utilizing GIS and Work Management Systems (WMS) such as GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, DDS, GDT, and Maximo.
• Partner directly with utility customers to ensure project requirements, quality standards, and deliverables are successfully met.
• Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and design milestones for assigned projects.
• Review and present engineering design packages to clients and stakeholders.
• Conduct project planning, coordination, customer follow-up, and scope analysis activities.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance workflow efficiency, accuracy, and overall design quality.
• Coordinate with utilities, contractors, municipalities, and other stakeholders to resolve design conflicts and support project execution.
• Assist with permitting, easement acquisition, right-of-way (ROW) applications, and utility coordination efforts.
• Participate in field visits to gather site information, verify existing conditions, and collect data necessary for design development.
• Support the development of complex cable and conduit designs in urban and utility infrastructure environments.
