Job description

Design Engineer – Apex Engineering Group, Inc.

Office Location: Any Apex Office (Fargo, Bismarck, or Dickinson, ND, or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka, MN). The position can be performed from any Apex office or hybrid location.

Primary responsibilities include working as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from the planning phase through design and construction. Design Engineers contribute independently and collaboratively to the development of project plans and specifications, working with project team members. Engineers typically report to a Project Manager or Senior Engineer but may lead projects as Project Manager depending on experience. Additional responsibilities may include serving as the project engineer/representative in the field during construction.

Typical Tasks and Duties
  • Provide professional civil engineering services for clients by providing planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, construction observation, and project management.
  • Delegate and supervise project tasks to CADD technicians, graduate engineers, and field technicians on the project team.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with supervisors and project managers to provide updates and progress during all phases of projects.
  • Attend company meetings, project meetings, and client meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participate in preparing proposals and interviews for securing work for the firm; business development responsibilities increase with experience and mentoring by senior staff.
  • Potential to advance to a more prominent role as Project Manager or Client Manager, responsible for project budgets and financial performance.
  • Effective communication skills with the public required for public involvement meetings, informational meetings, construction notifications, etc.
  • Initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
  • Take on the role of project engineer and owner's on‑site representative on construction projects.
  • Continuously learn and proficiently utilize CAD software to prepare plan documents.
  • Follow company CADD procedures and client CADD procedures when required.
  • Follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with strong attention to detail.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
  • Travel and out‑of‑town stays required; overtime expected, especially during construction season.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • MN or ND Professional Engineers License preferred or ability to obtain within 6–12 months required.
  • 5 or more years of highway/roadway design experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of MNDOT or NDDOT design and project development process preferred.
  • Proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation Connect; corridor modeling and design software highly preferred.
  • Ability to work in other civil design software platforms (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D) a plus.
  • Experience designing municipal/urban projects with underground utilities a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • A valid driver's license required or ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • Required to work in an outdoor environment during construction season.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing and walking for construction observation and surveying.
  • Required to lift objects or containers weighing 50 lbs.
  • Must work scheduled and required hours.

Hourly Base Pay Range: $40 – $55 (Actual base pay is dependent on several factors, including experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity.)
