Job summary

GreenSpark Solar in Rochester, NY seeks a Design Engineer to develop and optimize ground commercial solar PV designs, guided by real-world site conditions. You will assess ground conditions, review site data, and coordinate with a multidisciplinary team through permitting, approvals, and grants process.

The role requires 3+ years of electrical engineering or solar design experience, proficiency in AutoCAD, and knowledge of NEC/IFC codes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and/or related field preferred.
• NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification preferred.
• Proficient in AutoCAD; experience with PVSyst or PVCase preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication; attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Confirm preliminary site data.
• Conduct engineering site audits using drone imagery for PV designs.
• Perform shade analysis and energy modeling with PVSyst/PVCase.
• Research codes (NEC, IFC, local codes) for compliant designs.
• Create electrical single-line and three-line diagrams.
• Create CAD drawings for ground-mounted arrays.
• Support installation teams during build, testing, and commissioning.
• Develop and update SOPs, QC metrics, and safety standards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join GreenSpark Solar! The Design Engineer is responsible for developing and designing ground commercial solar PV projects, and the iterative process of adjusting designs to match real world conditions at individual project sites. This is a job local to the Rochester, NY region. This will include assessing ground conditions; assessing related structural or civil issues from photos, site survey information, or on-site visits; collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to guide projects through the permitting, approvals, and grant(s) processes from contract to completion.

The essential job functions of the Design Engineer include:

Confirming preliminary site data supplied by sales staff.

Conducting/ managing engineering site audits utilizing drone imagery and other technology to collect site information for use in electrical PV designs and physical site layouts

Performing shade analysis and energy production modeling via PVSyst and/or PVCase

Researching current National Electric Code, International Fire Code, local building and zoning codes, and other relevant codes applicable to the development of efficient and code compliant designs

Create electrical single-line and three-line diagrams for solar PV systems

Create drawing sets for ground mounted arrays in CAD

Understand and navigate utility interconnection issues.

Review specifications and recommend engineering or equipment changes to achieve solar design objectives.

Provide technical direction or support to installation teams during the installation, start-up, testing, system commissioning, and performance monitoring.

Implement and update standard operating procedures, quality control metrics, and safety standards.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

These are our education & qualification requirements:

• 3+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering or Solar design preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and/or related field preferred.
• Must be proficient in AutoCAD. Use of PVSyst or PVCase, preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of all applicable codes such as the National Electric Code and International Fire Code.
• Attention to detail and self-proof reading for accuracy.
• Ability to generate accurate, highly-detailed construction drawings using computer modeling software.
• Previous knowledge of solar power including formal education and/or certifications; NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional, preferred.
• Excellent time management skills with an ability to prioritize multiple assignments with tight deadlines.
