Job summary

Mitchell Homes seeks a Design Studio Consultant for our Midlothian studio. You will run selections appointments, guide buyers through the full feature catalog, and help balance their wish lists with budget to create a personalized home package.

You’ll produce precise selection sheets, coordinate with construction, and keep the studio current with displays and vendor updates. This role is in-person, full-time, with a focus on customer-driven design excellence.

Qualifications

• 2+ years in interior design, home design studio, or related field.
• Ability guiding customers through high-dollar purchases and discussions.
• Strong eye for color, materials, and finishes across a whole home.
• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail in selection sheets and plans.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple buyers at different stages.

Responsibilities

• Run selections appointments with home buyers from start to signed package.

Design Studio Consultant — Midlothian Design Studio

Mitchell Homes | Midlothian, VA | Full-Time | $60,000 – $70,000 (base + monthly options incentive)

Mitchell Homes has been building homes for more than 34 years, and our Midlothian Design Studio is the heart of the experience — a full selections showroom stocked with Kohler, Moen, KitchenAid, Mohawk, Sherwin-Williams, and CertainTeed (just to name a few brands), where buyers can see, touch, and compare every finish that goes into their home. We’re looking for a Design Consultant to run it.

Here’s what makes this different from a design center job at a production builder: our buyers build on their own land. They’re not picking from three packages on a spec lot. They’ve chosen the plan, they’ve chosen the property, and they come to you to make it theirs. That means real design conversations, real latitude, and a job where your taste and judgment actually show up in the finished house.

This is the best part of the home-building process. Buyers arrive excited, and you are the person who turns a floor plan into their home — cabinets, countertops, flooring, tile, lighting, exterior elevations, the whole package. You’ll guide them through it, help them spend confidently and within budget, and hand construction a selections package they can build from without a single question.

What You’ll Actually Do

• Run selections appointments with new-home buyers from start to signed package, typically over one to two sessions per family
• Present and explain the full included feature and upgrade catalog — interior and exterior — and make real recommendations rather than just taking orders
• Help buyers balance their wish list against their budget, and show them where an upgrade dollar buys the most impact
• Produce accurate, complete selection sheets and change orders, and hand them cleanly to construction and purchasing
• Merchandise and maintain the studio — keep displays current, samples in stock, and the room looking like the reason buyers drive to see us
• Meet with vendor reps to stay current on new products
• Partner with our sales team on buyer handoffs and keep selections on schedule so starts don’t slip

Requirements

What We're Looking For

Required

• 2+ years in interior design, new-home design studio / design center, kitchen and bath design, flooring or finishes sales, or a closely related field
• Comfort guiding customers through a high-dollar, emotional purchase — you can steer a decision without steamrolling it
• Strong eye for color, material, and how finishes work together across a whole home
• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail — a selection sheet error becomes a real problem in a real house
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple buyers at different stages at the same time
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and able to learn our builder software quickly
• Reliable in-person attendance at our Midlothian studio, with availability for a potential weekend and occasional evening appointments
• Valid driver's license

Preferred — not required, but tell us if you have it

• Experience at a production or semi-custom homebuilder
• Familiarity with builder management software (MarkSystems, BuilderTrend, Sales Simplicity, or similar)
• Degree or certificate in interior design or a related field
• Working knowledge of CAD, SketchUp, Chief Architect, Canva, or comparable visualization tools
• Previous relationships with regional flooring, cabinet, countertop, or lighting vendors
• Prior experience merchandising or setting up a showroom or design center
