Job summary

Stand Together, through Americans for Prosperity, seeks a Deputy State Director (AFP-Virginia) to guide policy, political, and grassroots priorities across the Commonwealth. You will travel regularly throughout Virginia, shape chapter strategy, and lead cross-functional teams in strategy and execution.

You will supervise and coach staff, represent AFP publicly to policymakers and partners, and advance bold reforms with a pragmatic, entrepreneurial mindset.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of public policy, politics, and government affairs and how they connect to grassroots strategy.
• Experience with legislative affairs, lobbying, policy development, coalition building, or grassroots advocacy.
• Entrepreneurial mindset: ownership, problem-solving, and proactive momentum.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the State Director to build and execute strategy across public policy, government affairs, grassroots advocacy, and political engagement in Virginia.
• Track Virginia’s General Assembly, executive branch, elections, and policy landscape; translate insights into clear strategy and opportunities.
• Build trusted relationships with legislators, administration officials, coalition partners, and community leaders across the political spectrum.
• Lead major legislative and advocacy initiatives from strategy through execution, collaborating with grassroots, communications, and political teams.
• Supervise, coach, and develop team members to foster a high-performing, collaborative culture.
• Represent AFP publicly with policymakers, coalition partners, media, and other audiences and tackle new priorities as they arise.

As Deputy State Director for AFP-Virginia, you’ll serve as a top strategic leader helping shape and execute the chapter’s policy, political, and grassroots priorities across the Commonwealth. We’re looking for an entrepreneurial, versatile leader who moves fluidly between big-picture strategy and hands-on execution, and who can travel regularly throughout Virginia.

How You Will Contribute

What You Will Bring

• Strong working knowledge of public policy, politics, and government affairs, and how they connect to grassroots strategy.


• Experience with legislative affairs, lobbying, policy development, coalition building, or grassroots advocacy.

• Strong political judgment and the ability to tell short-term activity apart from work that creates lasting impact.


• Experience building trusted relationships with elected officials, policymakers, and community leaders.


• Experience leading, coaching, or developing high-performing teams.


• Strong communication skills and comfort representing an organization publicly.


• Familiarity with Virginia’s political and legislative landscape, or the demonstrated ability to build that quickly.


• A valid driver’s license.

• Significant experience in or around a state legislature, governor’s office, political campaign, advocacy organization, or policy organization.


• Established relationships within Virginia’s political, business, or civic community.

$90,000 - $120,000 a year

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $90,000–$120,000 per year. This role may also be eligible for additional bonus compensation designed to align total compensation with an employee’s overall contribution to the organization.

Compensation decisions are informed by a variety of factors, including relevant experience, capabilities, demonstrated skills, role responsibilities, and expected contribution.
