Job summary

Allegan County is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Sheriff’s Reserve program. Under the direction of the County Sheriff or designee, you will perform limited patrol, traffic control and related law enforcement duties during various shifts.

Starting wage is $17.83 per hour, with no benefits, a variable schedule, and up to 19.5 hours per week. The next reserve deputy academy is scheduled for February 2027.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • No felony convictions; pass department background investigation.
  • Must undergo firearms qualification as outlined by policy and MCOLES requirements.
  • Candidates must pass a drug screen (THC included).

Responsibilities

  • Performs limited Sheriff's patrol, traffic control and related duties.
  • Rides with deputies to patrol County and City streets and assist with public safety.
  • Prepares reports and records including logs and incident forms.
  • Maintains contact with supervisors and coordinates department activities.
  • Assists with searches for missing persons and crime scene security.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the County Sheriff or County Sheriff's designee; performs limited Sheriff's Patrol, traffic control and related law enforcement duties.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Works on various shifts performing security patrols, traffic control and assisting deputy sheriff's and the public on various matters, such as: Safety awareness, community and school sporting events, fairs, drag ways, dances, and parades using vehicles, mounted on horseback, ORV, bike and foot patrols.
  • Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
  • Rides along with sheriff deputies to patrol County and City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to assist sheriff's deputies in preserving the peace, enforcing the law, protecting the public and controlling vehicular traffic.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and records including daily log, tow sheets, theft reports, vehicle impoundment forms, traffic hazard reports etc.
  • Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate activities, and provides general information about department activities.
  • Assist with adults, juveniles or animal transports.
  • Assists with crime scene security—fire/accident scene perimeter controls, crowd control, natural disaster/emergency response, court security functions and marine patrol.
  • County Park ordinance enforcement/Parks Patrol.
  • Assisting in searches for lost children and missing persons.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and have a good driving record
  • Applicant shall have no felony criminal convictions and be able to pass a department criminal background investigation
  • Applicant must undergo a structured training program / academy and qualify with approved firearms as outlined by departmental policy and MCOLES requirements.

*Candidates must pass a drug screen (which includes testing for THC) in order to be hired for this position.
