Job summary

Wilson County Government seeks a Deputy Sheriff to perform patrol, civil processing, and community service duties within Wilson County. The position involves responding to calls, serving papers, transporting inmates, and testifying in court under supervision.

Requires Basic Law Enforcement Certification and a valid NC driver’s license. Starting salary is $54,516 with a 2.5% adjustment after Field Training (4 months); includes a take-home car and competitive benefits.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizen, 21+ years old
• High school diploma or GED with some law enforcement training or experience or equivalent
• Not have felony conviction
• Not have certain misdemeanors
• Pass background investigation
• Pass pre-employment polygraph
• Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification
• Must possess NC driver’s license and firearms training upon hire

Responsibilities

• Serve criminal court papers such as warrants and subpoenas, as well as receiving and serving civil process papers
• Respond to crime scene calls to secure the scene and collect evidence
• Exercise sound judgment and maintain public safety under stress
• Perform patrols, investigations, and traffic duties within the county
• Transport inmates and testify in court; prepare case files for court
• Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; conduct security checks
• May serve as School Resource Officer or Court Bailiff; coordinate with court security
• Perform special duties and respond to emergencies in disaster situations
• Know sheriff's office operations and applicable laws; maintain records and reports
