Job summary

The Blaine County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Deputy Sheriff to enforce state laws and county ordinances, provide detention and courtroom services, and perform patrol duties as part of the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies must be able to operate without direct supervision in emergencies and will be armed with full arrest powers.

Responsibilities include patrols, investigations, reporting, evidence handling, CIT involvement, traffic enforcement, and court appearances.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Pass written examination unless waived by Sheriff Designee.
  • Must complete background investigation and medical/psychological exams.
  • Possess/obtain Class A license to perform duties as a law enforcement officer.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws and arrest violators.
  • Take detailed investigative notes and write reports.
  • Maintain an activity log of calls and incidents.
  • Intervene in domestic disturbances and crises (CIT).
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance and testify in court.
  • Process and collect evidence during investigations.

  • Operate MDT and two-way radios; transport detainees when needed.

Job description

The Deputy Sheriff position is responsible for the enforcement of State Laws and County Ordinances, providing detention and courtroom services, patrol duty and related supportive law enforcement activities in the Sheriff’s Office. Work involves prevention, detection and investigation of accident and criminal activities, security and safety of detainees/inmates/prisoners, protection for the public and maintaining law and order. Deputies must be able to act without direct supervision in emergency situations. Deputies will be armed and have full power of arrest.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • a. Patrols assigned area(s) to enforce State Laws and County Ordinances, conduct criminal investigations, and arrest violators when applicable.
  • b. Ability to take detailed investigative notes.
  • c. Write criminal incident/investigative reports and citations; document and maintain files, including using computers for reporting and retrieval of investigative information.
  • d. Maintain an Activity Log, detailing calls for service, traffic stops, investigative stops/activities and other pertinent information which occurred during an assigned shift.
  • e. Intervene in domestic disturbances and mental health disturbances (Crisis Intervention Techniques C.I.T.)
  • f. Report for duty assignments during times of civil unrest or natural disasters.
  • g. Respond to Citizen’s request(s) for assistance.
  • h. Educate the public on crime prevention techniques.
  • i. Process and collect evidence during a criminal investigation.
  • j. Investigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons, quell disturbances, and arrest law violators.
  • k. Acquires, executes, and returns warrants and search warrants.
  • l. Searches and assists in locating missing/endangered missing persons or bodies.
  • m. Monitor vehicle traffic on highways and roadways within the County, observe traffic violations and take the appropriate corrective action, to include the issuance of citations.
  • n. Operate a radar (speed measurement) unit in patrol vehicle speed limit enforcement compliance.
  • o. Operate a Mobile Data Terminal to document daily field activity, investigate criminal incidents, investigate motor vehicle crashes, and document criminal incidents and motor vehicle crashes.
  • p. Assumes control at motor vehicle crash scene to maintain traffic flow, assist victims, and investigate the cause of the motor vehicle crash.
  • q. Operate a patrol vehicle and be proficient with other duty related equipment, including firearms, during hours of work.
  • r. Locate and place persons into custody on arrest warrants or body attachments.
  • s. Transports prisoners/detainees/inmates and juveniles to and from appropriate correctional facilities, to include Court.
  • t. Searches prisoners/detainees for weapons and contraband.
  • u. Serves ExPartes, subpoenas and summonses, and keeps record of dispositions.
  • v. Operate a two-way patrol vehicle radio or portable radio to deliver/receive precise pertinent information to other patrol units and our dispatching center.
  • w. Answer/reply to telephone messages, emails, letters, or investigative requests from Prosecuting Attorneys.
  • x. Provide testimony in Court.
  • y. Periodically engages in vehicular pursuits to bring violators/suspects into custody to prevent property damage, injury, or death.
  • z. Conduct verification of residency for registered sex offenders (as directed).
  • aa. Submit monthly statistical information to their direct supervisor.
  • bb. A Deputy position may be assigned a department multi-purpose or single purpose canine partner to assist in their daily duties.
  • cc. Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
  • dd. Perform other job-related work tasks as required.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but employee may serve as a Field Training Officer for newly hired Deputies in the Sheriff’s Office.

This position includes the possibility of physical attack or injury. It includes exposure to fast moving vehicles and motor vehicle crashes. Requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 165 pounds infrequently and the ability to frequently remain stationary for long periods of time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate or gather information. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must be able to use force, to include deadly force, as necessary.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This position regularly requires twelve (12) hour shifts, with the possibility of additional hours and frequent night, weekend, and holiday work.

Travel:

Travel is primarily locally during the business day, although some out of the area travel and overnight may be expected.

Required Education and/or Experience:
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree. Or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Passing score on written examination unless waived by the Sheriff or his Designee.
  • The employee must successfully pass the required department Physical Job Task Analysis Test unless waived by the Sheriff or his Designee.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam, and voice stress analysis.
  • Possess/obtain a Class A License to perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer from Missouri Department of Public Safety Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and legally be able to carry a firearm.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
  • Prior experience as a law enforcement officer.
  • Associate degree from a two-year college in criminal justice, or business administration or related field from an accredited college or university. Or related experience and/or training, Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Master’s degree in criminal justice or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
  • Complete twenty-four (24) hours of annual P.O.S.T. approved continuing education in the required categories and sub-categories to maintain law enforcement certification.
  • Possess a valid Missouri driver’s license. Must not have any revocations or drinking/drug convictions.
  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County.
  • Knowledge of the General Orders, Policies and Directives of the Sheriff’s Department.
  • Knowledge of first aid principles.
  • Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation.
  • Ability to work without supervision and to make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to restrain an individual and employ all use of force options.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and batons.
  • Knowledge of State Statutes and County Ordinances.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Employees are required to work both day and night shifts. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to perform both indoor and outdoor work with exposure at times to extreme weather conditions. There is the possibility of exposure to fire, chemical, electrical, mechanical, biohazard and firearm hazards. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Much of the time spent in this position will be spent in an office environment or in a motor vehicle.
