Coconino County's Sheriff's Office (Patrol) is seeking a Deputy Recruit for training toward Deputy Sheriff. The role focuses on learning law enforcement principles through AZPOST academy, supervised by staff, with the path to promotion upon successful completion and departmental approval.
The position emphasizes rigorous training, physical conditioning, and the development of accurate reporting and law application skills, under standard workplace safety policies.
Nature of Work
Under close supervision, and in a training capacity, is responsible for technical work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement or investigative duties; performs related work as assigned.
Deputy Recruit is the trainee level with incumbents occupying the classification prior to their completion of an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy. Deputy Recruits normally work in a training capacity supervised by a training officer or academy staff. Work methods and results are under constant review by supervisory personnel through observation, discussion, written and proficiency testing and results achieved. Upon completion of the academy and subject to departmental approval, a Deputy Recruit may be promoted to the Deputy Sheriff class. Except under special circumstances, a Deputy Recruit who fails to successfully complete the academy in which they are enrolled, and promote to Deputy Sheriff, will be terminated from the Deputy Recruit classification.

Must obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) within one year of employment with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. Must pass AZPOST prescribed physical agility test. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must submit to a background search and successfully pass drug screen, physical and polygraph examination prior to employment.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.
