Job summary

MP Engineers + Architects seeks a Deputy Director of Facility Design to lead planning, design, and delivery of public-sector projects across New York City and New York State. Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in engineering, facility design, architecture, or construction-related project delivery.

  • Experience with NYCSCA, NYCHA, DDC, DOE and other NYC/NY State agencies.
  • Strong knowledge of codes, standards, and regulatory requirements; ability to mentor staff.
  • Experience leading proposals, pursuits, and RFP submissions; strong client relations.

Job description

The Deputy Director of Facility Design serves as a senior leader within the organization and acts as the primary support and strategic partner to the Vice President of Facility Design. This role is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and delivery of public-sector facility projects throughout New York City and New York State while providing technical leadership, staff mentorship, client engagement, and operational oversight.

The ideal candidate will be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New York State with more than 10 years of engineering and facility design experience and at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience managing projects for agencies such as the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA), New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and other municipal and state agencies. This individual will play a key role in business development efforts, proposal preparation, technical quality control, staff development, and maintaining strong client relationships.

Education & Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in New York State required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in engineering, facility design, architecture, or construction-related project delivery.
  • Minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience managing multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Demonstrated experience working with public-sector clients, including:
  • New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA)
  • New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)
  • NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC)
  • Department of Education (DOE)
  • Other New York City and New York State agencies
  • Strong understanding of facility design, architectural review processes, building codes, agency standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proven ability to mentor, train, and develop engineering and design professionals.
  • Experience leading proposal development, pursuits, and Request for Proposal (RFP) submissions.
  • Strong knowledge of contract administration, change orders, project controls, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and client relationship management skills.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and design review software platforms.
  • Ability to review architectural, engineering, and construction documents for quality, compliance, and constructability.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary deputy to the Vice President of Facility Design and support department operations, strategic initiatives, and growth objectives.
  • Lead multidisciplinary design teams to ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and technical excellence.
  • Promote collaboration, accountability, and staff development across the department.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance for facility design projects.
  • Review design documents and technical deliverables for compliance with applicable codes, agency requirements, and quality standards.
  • Oversee project execution from planning and design through construction support.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for public-sector clients, including NYCSCA, NYCHA, DDC, DOE, and other agencies.
  • Lead client meetings, presentations, and project reviews while resolving project issues and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
  • Support business development efforts through proposal preparation, pursuit strategies, staffing plans, and fee development.
  • Represent the company in interviews, presentations, and procurement opportunities.
  • Oversee contract administration activities, including change orders, RFIs, submittals, and construction-phase coordination.
  • Monitor project budgets, schedules, resources, and risk management activities.
  • Mentor and develop engineering, architectural, and project management staff.
  • Establish and maintain best practices, quality standards, and professional development programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience with NYCSCA projects and procurement processes.
  • Established relationships with New York City and New York State public-sector agencies.
  • Experience managing large-scale educational, institutional, municipal, or public facility projects.
  • Strong understanding of public-sector contracting, funding requirements, and agency review processes.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading high-performing design and engineering teams.
