Job summary

The Office of General Counsel at the Illinois Department of Human Services seeks a Deputy General Counsel for its Division of Labor and Employment to provide legal advice on employment law matters including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Title VII, and the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Qualifications

• Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and Illinois license required.
• Progressively responsible administrative legal experience.
• Experience litigating employment matters in federal/state courts or IHRC/ICOS/CHRC.
• Experience providing legal advice to management on labor, employment, benefits and immigration matters.
• Experience with employee accommodations, FMLA, military leaves, or discipline.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on employment law matters including ADA, FMLA, FLSA, Title VII, IHRA.
• Supervise staff and provide advisory functions to management on labor relations and personnel issues.
• Assist the General Counsel in the overall functioning of the Office of General Counsel within DHS.

Key qualifications:

• Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and Illinois law license required
• Four years of progressively responsible administrative experience in the practice of law
• Professional legal experience litigating employment matters in federal or state courts, IHRC, ICSC, or Chicago Commission on Human Relations
• Professional legal experience providing legal advice to management on labor, employment, benefits, and immigration matters
• Professional legal experience with employee accommodations, FMLA, military leaves, or employee discipline matters
