Job summary

The West Virginia State Bar is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to provide legal services across state agencies, with emphasis on real property, contracts, and administrative law. You will support the General Counsel, perform legal research, draft and negotiate agreements, conduct title examinations, and coordinate with the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office on litigation and employment matters.

Travel occasionally and participate in training as needed.

Qualifications

Graduation from an ABA-accredited or regionally accredited law school.
Active license to practice law in West Virginia or admission within 24 months of employment.
Minimum of three years of experience as a licensed attorney.

Responsibilities

Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements, memoranda of understanding, and contracts.
Provide legal services to the department and support counsel in litigation and advisory matters.
Perform real estate closings, title examinations, and due diligence for transactions.
Conduct legal research on real property, contract, employment, administrative, and environmental issues.
Present legal recommendations to boards and coordinate with the Attorney General’s Office on litigation.
Assist with rulemaking, policy development, and training for staff and partners.
