Job summary

West Virginia Department of Agriculture is seeking a Deputy General Counsel in Kanawha County to provide legal services to the agency and the Conservation Agency, reporting to the General Counsel.

The position requires a Juris Doctor, admission to the West Virginia State Bar within 24 months, and at least three years of licensed attorney experience. Responsibilities include drafting contracts, real estate closings, and complex legal research while coordinating with the Attorney General’s Office.

Qualifications

• Requires Juris Doctor (JD) or ABA-accredited law degree.
• Admission to the West Virginia State Bar within 24 months of employment is required.
• At least three years of experience as a licensed attorney, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements, memoranda of understanding, and contracts.
• Conduct real estate closings for land transfers and prepare related instruments.
• Perform legal research on a wide range of issues including real property, contract, employment, and environmental law.
• Provide legal advice to the department and coordinate with the Attorney General's Office on litigation matters.
• Assist with legislative rulemaking and provide training on agriculture and conservation matters.
