Position Overview

The Special Events Fire Inspector position is a specialized assignment within the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office (HCFMO) Prevention Bureau responsible for identifying, evaluating, inspecting, and documenting special events occurring throughout Harris County. The Special Events Team consists of inspectors operating on staggered schedules to provide seven-day coverage and support events occurring during normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Special events present unique and rapidly changing fire and life-safety challenges. Inspectors assigned to this team must possess a strong working knowledge of the adopted International Fire Codes (IFC), applicable NFPA standards, operational permitting requirements, means of egress, occupant loads, tents and temporary structures, cooking operations, fire protection systems, emergency access, crowd management, flammable and combustible liquids, generators, temporary electrical installations, and other hazards commonly associated with temporary events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections of festivals, fairs, concerts, sporting events, community events, temporary gatherings, markets, carnivals, large assembly events, and other special events within HCFMO jurisdiction.
  
  
  • Ensure quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned tasks, complaints process, including program management in accordance with HCFMO policies and procedures.
  
  
  • Proactively identify special events occurring throughout Harris County that may require an HCFMO operational permit, inspection, or fire and life-safety evaluation. This position requires inspectors to actively seek out events and potential compliance issues rather than relying solely on assigned inspections or permit applications.

Other Duties

• Perform as a member of an Incident Management Team during emergency or disaster situations.


• Maintain situational awareness of all HCFMO activities.


• Serve on committees, boards, or other teams as assigned by the Fire Marshal or designee.


• Perform assigned tasks safely, and document and report initial accidents, injuries, or health exposures in accordance with accepted safety practices and HCFMO policy.

Experience and Experience

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.


• Verifiable one (1) year customer service experience.

Licensure

• At the date of hire, possess a valid driver’s license, State of Texas Class C.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Have a mastery-level knowledge of recognized standards, codes, and laws for fire inspections and identification of fire and life safety hazards, including LGC. 352.016.


• Strong knowledge of fire safety codes, regulations, and standards.


• Excellent observational and analytical skills.


• Effective written and verbal communication skills.


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


• Proficiency with computer applications and inspection tools.


• Knowledge in various areas relevant to the HCFMO


• Possess a valid driver's license, State of Texas Class C


• Knowledge of Incident Management, such as the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and within one year, provide proof of completion of ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800


• Knowledge of Plans examination and the ability to obtain TCFP certification as a plan examiner within one year

Automatic Disqualification

• Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for any Felony, and any Class A Misdemeanor.


• Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor, if within the previous 10 years.


• Open arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor).


• Family Violence conviction.

  • These positions are assigned an alternate work schedule based on the operational needs of the Special Events Program. The normal workweek is 40 hours; however, because special events routinely occur after normal business hours, at night, on weekends, and on holidays, employees assigned to these positions are subject to flex time and alternate work hours.
  
  
  • The three positions will operate on staggered schedules to provide seven-day-a-week coverage, while generally providing each employee two scheduled days off per week.
  
  
  • Schedules may be adjusted based on event schedules, staffing requirements, and operational needs.
  
  
  • Normal duty hours are 0800–1600, but employees may flex their start and end times when assigned to evening or late-night events, as directed by supervisors.
  
  
  • After-hours, weekend, and holiday assignments are considered a normal and expected function of these positions and may occasionally occur.
