Chalkbeat, part of Civic News Company, is seeking a Deputy Editor in Chief to guide editorial vision and newsroom leadership. You will work with the Editor in Chief to manage reporting teams, drive impact, and shape major projects across education-focused journalism.

The role requires a decade of leadership experience, a track record in editorial strategy, and a commitment to high-quality, inclusive reporting. Remote work is available with a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of work experience with leadership experience.
• Experience reporting and editing breaking news, daily, and enterprise stories.
• Track record of leading teams with high standards and accountability, including coaching employees at varying levels.
• Track record of managing complex projects from vision to sustainable processes.
• Experience developing editorial strategy and building an audience.
• Deep knowledge of America’s education story and curiosity about its future.

Responsibilities

• Set and execute the editorial vision in partnership with the Editor in Chief.
• Oversee multiple reporting teams and local bureaus to drive impact and informed debate.
• Coach leaders, set goals, monitor progress, and support professional growth.
• Support implementation of Civic News Academy.
• Lead high-priority initiatives like impact tracking, newsroom AI strategy, and geographic expansion.
• Collaborate with growth and community teams to expand audience and engagement.
• Ensure enterprise projects are compelling and well-executed.
• Represent organizational priorities to local teams and vice versa.
