About Bakehouse Art Complex

Bakehouse Art Complex envisions a world that supports and values artists and recognizes their power to shape, reflect, and transform society. Located on a 2.3-acre campus in the Wynwood Norte neighborhood of Miami, Bakehouse is a nonprofit committed to creating space, community, and opportunity for artists.

Founded in 1986 in a historic Art Deco-era industrial bakery, Bakehouse has provided affordable studios, shared facilities, and a vibrant, supportive community for artists to experiment, grow professionally, and engage the public. Today, we host approximately 70 artists in 60 studios, alongside shared galleries, a print shop, photo lab, ceramics studio, and woodworking and metal shops, also serving 50+ additional artists.

Now entering a transformative new chapter, Bakehouse is advancing a bold vision to redevelop its campus into a next-generation cultural hub—one that includes new affordable housing for artists, expanded state-of-the-art art-making spaces, and inclusive community amenities.

Position Summary

The Deputy Director is a senior leader who helps shape and execute Bakehouse’s mission and strategic vision. Working closely with the Executive Director and the Deputy Director for Planning, Operations, and Technology, this position provides strategic and operational oversight across all programmatic and engagement areas of the organization.

This individual plays a critical role in leading and overseeing our artist residencies, public programs, exhibitions, and community initiatives, ensuring all efforts align with Bakehouse’s values of accessibilityand artistic excellence. The Deputy Director also contributes to fundraising, board engagement, budgeting, and day-to-day organizational management, fostering collaboration, innovation, and a culture of care.

Primary Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Strategy

  • Partner with the Executive Director and senior leadership to implement the Next Generation Strategic Plan (2024–2029) and guide institutional growth.
  • Supervise and mentor programmatic staff, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and artist-centered culture.
  • Work alongside or in tandem with other senior staff to help implement and execute programing, facilities upgrades as related to Bakehouse’s incremental development.
  • Represent the Executive Director as needed and serve as acting director in their absence.
  • Champion cross-departmental coordination and effective internal communication.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of artist residencies, exhibitions, public programs, and community engagement.

Program Design & Oversight

  • Ensure all programs reflect organizational mission, serve a diverse community, and promote artistic innovation.
  • Develop systems to track program impact, artist and audience satisfaction, and community benefit.
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of new initiatives aligned with the evolving needs of artists and Bakehouse’s expanded campus vision.

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day operations related to programs, events, and internal workflows, in collaboration with operations and facilities teams.
  • Ensure organizational systems and structures enable efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness.
  • Support risk management, compliance, and internal policy development.

Development & External Relations

  • Support fundraising strategy and implementation alongside the Executive Director and Development Director.
  • Contribute to grant writing, reporting, and donor stewardship.
  • Help cultivate institutional and community partnerships to enhance resources and visibility.

Finance & Budgeting

  • Work with the Business Manager and CFO to plan and manage program budgets and ensure responsible financial stewardship.
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and strategic resource allocation and forecasting.
  • Prepares annual departmental budgets.

Governance & Board Engagement

  • Prepare board and committee materials, as needed by Director and Board; participate in meetings and assist in board cultivation and development.
  • Represent Bakehouse to funders, partners, and stakeholders to advance mission visibility and impact.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in arts administration, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success managing teams, programs, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Deep knowledge of artist support models and familiarity with contemporary art and cultural policy issues.
  • Experience in fundraising, strategic planning, and budget management.
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced, evolving environment with creativity and accountability.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, Cultural Policy, or related discipline.
  • Experience managing cultural organizations,artist residencies, studio facilities, and or public art programs.
  • Bilingual or multilingual, particularly in Spanish or Haitian Creole, is a plus.
