Job summary

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Minnesota Disability Law Center (MDLC) seeks a full-time Deputy Director to lead and coordinate MDLC’s work, reporting to the Executive Director. The role includes statewide impact, board collaboration, and governance oversight, with a hybrid work model and an office in Minneapolis.

The Deputy Director will supervise 20–25 attorneys and advocates, manage grants, and lead strategic planning while advancing disability rights and equity within MMLA/MDLC.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed to practice law in Minnesota or eligible for admission by reciprocity.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities or disability rights and advocacy.
• Five or more years of managerial experience.
• Eight or more years of legal experience.
• Three or more years of litigation experience.
• Demonstrated legal skills including: excellent written and verbal communication, effective litigation outcomes, proven record of case handling.
• Grant management experience, especially federal grants.
• Ability to build partnerships with advocacy groups and client communities.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership in advancing organizational goals and MDLC, including diversity, equity, and inclusion values.
• Coordinate with community and legal partners to provide high quality community-based legal services.
• Manage MDLC grant budgets, staffing allocations, and work planning for multiple grants.
• Lead grant opportunities and supervise federal audits with the Grants Manager.
• Oversee compliance with federal requirements for the Mental Health Advisory Council.
• Lead MDLC priority-setting and five-year strategic plans through governance bodies.
• Engage with MMLA Board and attend quarterly meetings to report on MDLC work.
• Supervise MDLC Legal Director and assigned staff; manage 20–25 attorneys and advocates.
• Oversee staff hiring, onboarding, and orientation; handle client grievances as per policy.
• Lead unit meetings and training; ensure ethics compliance and statewide travel as needed.
