Job description

Under the direction of the Assistant County Counsel, provide legal counsel to the County, its boards, commissions, department heads, and officers; prepare pleadings, summaries, stipulations, agreements, and court orders; conduct legal research; practice appellate law in federal and State courts.

The duties performed by the Deputy County Counsel I, II, III, and IV are similar in terms of specific tasks assigned. The differences between classifications are related to the complexity and difficulty of cases, supervision levels, and responsibilities in leading staff. Deputy County Counsel I is the entry level, working under close supervision on routine cases. Deputy County Counsel II works under minimal supervision, performing full duties. Deputy County Counsel III may serve as a lead, advising other attorneys on more complex cases. Deputy County Counsel IV is the advanced level, providing technical expertise and guidance on the most complex and controversial cases.

Any combination equivalent to: meeting the requirements to be licensed by the State of California to practice law.

Valid California driver’s license; license by the State Bar to practice law in California.

A valid driver’s license may be required at appointment, and employees may need to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC § 160020. Individuals unable to meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed case-by-case.

This position may require pre-employment drug testing, physical examination, and fingerprinting for a background check.
