Job summary

Florida Memorial University seeks a Deputy Controller to lead accounts payable, cash management, procurement services, and fixed asset reporting. This role reports to the Assistant VP of Finance & Controller and guides the accounting function with GAAP-compliant reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance with 10+ years of direct experience.
  • Master's degree in accounting or finance with 5–7 years of experience acceptable.
  • 5+ years of nonprofit or higher education experience with a budget of $40M+.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and review financial transactions for assigned accounts and units.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and financial reports to GAAP.
  • Maintain records of inventory, fixed assets, and other data.
  • Maintain accounting controls and audit documents.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile accounts.
  • Manage payroll processing and payroll tax filings for multiple units.
  • Assist external/internal audits and respond to requests.
  • Participate in special projects and training.

Job description

The Deputy Controller shall have the primary responsibility of performing a variety of general accounting functions along with leading Florida Memorial in accounts payable, cash management, procurement services, and fixed asset reporting. This position reports to the Assistant VP of Finance & Controller and is responsible for applying general principles of accounting, reviewing and analyzing financial information, and preparing financial reports. An ideal candidate is responsive, thoughtful, self-directed, positive, and seeking an invigorating role. Also, must be fully prepared to step into the role of AVP/Controller within 6-8 months after hire.Essential Functions:Monitor and review financial transactions and activities for assigned accounts, funds, departments, and units.Prepare monthly and annual bank reconciliations and financial reports and statements for assigned areas to ensure compliance with various statutory requirements, generally accepted accounting principles, and established policies and procedures.Maintain accurate records of inventory, fixed assets, and other financial data.Maintain accounting controls and audit documents.Prepare journal entries and maintain and reconcile accounts.Assist in the preparation of various special reports as directed.Perform and direct the entire process of in-house payroll ensuring the timely and accurate computation and payment of earnings for multiple business units and employers.Oversee the timely payment and accuracy of payroll tax liabilities and the filing of payroll tax returns.Assist with external/internal audit requests and provide information as requested.Participate in special projects, team training, and development.Assist in the processing of accounts payable and review proper accounting treatment for all transactions.Provide technical accounting support to various departments.Assist with the development, review, and updating of accounting policies, procedures, checklists, and related documentation concerning assigned functions and responsibilities.The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Well organized, and proactive, must be able to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment.Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information, protect the assets of the institution, act ethically and with integrity, and adhere to FMU's Code of Conduct and policies and procedures.Effective analytical and decision-making skills.Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.Minimum Requirements:The position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance with at least 10 or more years direct experience. Master's degree in accounting or finance with 5-7 years is acceptable.5+ years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities with a non-profit or higher education institution with a budget of $40M or above.Knowledge of the full accounting cycle including bank reconciliations.Experience in working with multiple legal entities under different legal umbrellas.Ability to perform complex tasks and prioritize multiple projects.Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.Familiar with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education.Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.Pre-Employment Requirements:Criminal background checkFlorida Memorial University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
