Job summary

ICMA invites a strategic Deputy City Manager to guide Maricopa’s rapid growth with a focus on operations, governance, and fiscal stewardship. You will align day-to-day work with the city’s mission, directing Directors and Division Managers while driving continuous improvement and regional collaboration.

The ideal candidate has strong municipal management experience, political acumen, and a proven ability to build trust across departments and with the public. Arizona driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, finance, communications, or related field.
• Five years of management experience in administration, finance, or management with local government or similar organization.
• Local government experience is necessary.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license or obtain one within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

The Deputy City Manager (DCM) is a key member of Maricopa’s executive leadership team, responsible for ensuring the day-to-day operations of assigned areas function at an optimal level and align with the City’s mission, objectives, and strategic priorities. The DCM directly oversees assigned Directors and Division Managers and other assigned staff while helping drive innovation, organizational effectiveness, and continuous improvement. Maricopa’s ideal DCM will be a consensus builder and relationship-driven executive who can establish trust internally while developing productive partnerships throughout the region and state. The successful candidate will understand the political environment of municipal government and know how to navigate complex issues with professionalism and sound judgment.

Required qualifications include:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration, business administration, finance, communications, or a closely related field.
• Five years of management experience in administration, finance, or management with a local government agency or business in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
• Local government experience is necessary for this position.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license or obtain one within 30 days of hire, unless a qualifying military-related exception applies.

Preferred:

• Master’s degree.
• Executive-level experience as a City Manager, Assistant City Manager, Deputy City Manager, or comparable position.

The salary range for this position is $186,000–$224,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
