Job summary

The Oregon Department of Justice seeks a Deputy Chief Trial Counsel to lead the Trial Division, shaping strategic direction and managing civil litigation for state agencies. You will partner with the Chief Trial Counsel to set division-wide policies and long-range plans, mentor attorneys, and drive performance standards across several sections.

Travel up to a few days per month, with a hybrid work option requiring in-office presence at least two days weekly.

Qualifications

• Three years of management experience, including managing practicing attorneys; JD required.
• Active Oregon State Bar membership or reciprocity eligibility; at least ten years of legal practice.
• Ability to guide complex litigation, set strategies, assess risk, and ensure consistent state legal positions.
• Strong analytical thinking, principled decision-making, and mentoring abilities.
• Ability to lead, coach, and develop attorneys across experience levels.
• Proven ability to foster an inclusive, high-performing team culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead division-wide policy development and strategic direction for the Trial Division.
• Oversee multiple sections, coordinate civil litigation and legal services statewide.
• Partner with Chief Trial Counsel on budgets, resource allocation, and performance metrics.
• Mentor attorneys and staff; drive training and succession planning.
• Communicate clearly with agency clients and external partners; manage workloads and deadlines.
• Promote ethics, public service, and transparent decision-making under pressure.
