Job description

General Information:

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) seeks a Deputy Communications Director to take primary responsibility for the campaign side communications. This position will engage in both social media and more traditional communications strategy and tactics as well as staffing the Congresswoman. This position will play a central role in developing strategy and implementing communications strategy for the various campaign efforts.


The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of communications experience in increasingly senior positions, including on issue and/or electoral campaigns. While based in Washington, DC, this position requires travel, and some weekend and evening work. This position reports to the Communications Director.


Responsibilities


Develop and Execute Communications Strategies:

Formulate and implement communication plans to achieve campaign objectives, considering key audiences and messaging goals.


Manage Communication Channels:
Oversee and manage social media, website, press releases, email, and other communication platforms.


Create and Distribute Content:
Develop engaging content, including social media posts, blog articles, press releases, and other materials, to promote the campaign. Assist in building up Resistance Labs including internal communications (i.e. toolkit, scripts), public communications (e.g. rapid response emails, weekly action emails), and designing printed materials for campaign events.


Media Relations:
Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media outlets, and other key media contacts to secure coverage and media opportunities.


Monitor and Analyze Performance:
Track campaign performance, analyze data, and make adjustments to strategies based on results.


Collaborate with Campaign Team:
Work closely with other team members, including campaign managers, strategists, and volunteers, to ensure cohesive messaging and effective communication.


Respond to Media Inquiries:
Help handle media requests, conduct interviews, and provide timely and accurate information to journalists.


Develop Messaging:
Craft clear, concise, and persuasive messages that resonate with the target audience.


Stay Updated on Current Events:
Monitor news and social media trends to identify opportunities and challenges for the campaign.


Draft Long Form Content:

Write remarks, video scripts, op-eds.


Staff Member of Congress:

Plan campaign trips and travel with the Congresswoman on campaign events to help staff press, record/cut material, manage social.

Skills and Abilities


Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.


Digital Landscape: Understanding of various digital communication channels, including social media, email marketing, and website content management. Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and InDesign skills are required.


Political and Analytical Skills: Strongly developed political analysis and ability to assess and prepare Congresswoman for key decisions or interviews, build Congresswoman’s presence and profile, analyze campaign performance metrics and draw insights.


Creativity: Ability to develop innovative communication strategies and creative content.


Problem-Solving: A proactive attitude and ability to troubleshoot and fix campaign issues.


Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

The salary range is $90,000-100,000, depending on experience, includes health care, dental, and vision.
