Job summary

Custer County in South Dakota is seeking a Deputy Auditor Administrative Clerk to join the finance and elections teams. This full-time role requires accuracy, discretion, and a detail-oriented approach to payroll, benefits, records, and office administration.

Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a starting wage of $19.04 per hour and a comprehensive county benefits package. The position reports to the County Finance Officer and offers opportunities for professional growth.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • 1+ year of clerical or office support experience preferred.
  • Government, elections, payroll, accounting, finance, or records management experience is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and ability to learn payroll/election/ accounting software.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish positive working relationships with coworkers, elected officials, state agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to the public, County departments, elected officials, and outside agencies in person, by phone, email, and other forms of communication.
  • Assist with voter registration, absentee voting, election preparation, election-day activities, and maintaining voter registration records.
  • Prepare County Commission agendas and supporting documents, attend Commission meetings, record meeting minutes, and post agendas and approved minutes.
  • Assist with payroll processing, payroll data entry, leave tracking, payroll records, benefit deductions, and employee benefits administration.
  • Process employee benefit payments and maintain benefit-related records and documentation.
  • Assist with workers' compensation claims, insurance claims, and related administrative functions.
  • Process deposits and prepare reports for school districts, townships, fire districts, ambulance districts, and road districts.
  • Assist with financial reports, reconciliations, monthly cost adjustments, inventory records, and other accounting-related functions.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support for the Auditor's Office, including filing, records management, mail processing, document preparation, scanning, copying, and maintaining electronic and paper records.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with County policies, state laws, and records retention requirements.
  • Attend training opportunities related to payroll, elections, finance, records management, and county government.
  • Perform a variety of office support duties and assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Job description

This position is located in Custer, SD. Relocation or commute required.

Custer County is currently accepting applications for a full-time Deputy Auditor Administrative Clerk. This position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, and ready to support a wide range of county operations, including payroll, employee benefits, elections, County Commission administration, financial recordkeeping, records management, and general office administration.

The ideal candidate will be organized, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills, excellent customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment are essential. The successful candidate must be able to maintain confidentiality while working with sensitive financial, payroll, and personnel information.

This is a full-time position with a Monday-Friday schedule (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM), starting at $19.04 per hour, with a comprehensive county benefits package, paid leave, and opportunities for professional growth within county government. The position reports to the County Finance Officer.
