Job summary

Day & Zimmermann Company is seeking a Department Manager for Process & Mechanical in the United States. You will lead a team of piping engineers and designers, guiding resource planning, budgeting, and project delivery across multiple initiatives with emphasis on safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required; advanced degrees or certifications in related fields are highly valued and considered advantageous.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience within the EPCm sector or in operations directly linked to chemical process industries such as Chemical, Petrochemical, Fibers, or Chemical Intermediates.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is mandatory to ensure compliance with engineering best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Preferred experience in secondary industry sectors including Pharmaceutical, Food & Beverage, or Advanced Manufacturing, which adds versatility and domain knowledge to the role.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software especially Autodesk Plant 3D, along with experience in laser scanning technology, is a strong asset enhancing the department's technological capabilities.
  • Knowledge and practical expertise in pipe stress analysis using Caesar II software are desirable for optimized design and safety assurances.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate all aspects of departmental resources including manpower allocation, technical tools, project scopes, and budget estimates to ensure efficient project delivery across multiple initiatives.
  • Ensure that all engineering outputs from the department comply with company policies, client requirements, and national engineering codes and standards, maintaining the highest levels of technical accuracy and safety.
  • Develop and implement staffing plans to maximize productivity and project utilization rates, aligning workforce capabilities with project demands and long‑term organizational objectives.
  • Lead the professional growth of department members through targeted training programs, mentoring, and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and manage compensation processes to recognize and reward employee contributions effectively.
  • Assume responsibility for meeting discipline‑specific cost management, scheduling objectives, and quality control on all projects, ensuring deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate with senior management and project teams to develop strategic plans that support company growth, operational excellence, and client satisfaction.

As the leader of the Piping Department, you will play a pivotal role in guiding a skilled team of piping engineers and designers towards delivering high-quality engineering solutions. Your leadership will directly influence the efficiency and success of complex projects by fostering a collaborative environment where innovation, technical excellence, and safety are paramount. You will be responsible for setting strategic goals, ensuring resource alignment, and championing continuous improvement initiatives that drive both team development and business growth.

In this capacity, you will interface closely with cross-functional teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure that the department's output meets and exceeds industry standards as well as our company's commitment to quality and safety. As the Department Manager, Mechanical & Process, here's the work you'll do:

  • Strong expertise in formulating design bases for Capital Cost Estimates, scheduling frameworks, controlling costs, and managing communication channels effectively at all levels.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications complemented by adaptability to new software tools and technologies as needed for project management and design workflows.
  • Demonstrated capability to work with AutoCAD and Bluebeam software platforms to produce accurate and detailed engineering drawings and documentation.

In compliance with this state's pay transparency laws, the salary range for this role is $136,480 - $204,720. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as the final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. (The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements).
