Burns & McDonnell seeks an accomplished leader to head the enterprise Data Engineering & AI delivery organization. You will drive a unified platform strategy across Azure, AWS, GCP, Palantir, and Databricks, delivering secure, scalable data and AI products.
Responsible for governance, standards, and talent development across global teams. You will partner with IT and security to set a shared engineering playbook, drive adoption of common patterns, and measure delivery performance against
Lead the enterprise Data Engineering & AI delivery organization, building and operating shared, reusable capabilities that turn prioritized business demand into secure, scalable, production-grade data and AI products. Reporting to the Managing Director, Data & AI, this leader is one of three Data & AI leadership pillars and partners with IT on enterprise platforms while owning Data & AI engineering execution, talent, standards (including the engineering playbook and training approach), the enterprise ontology and AI brain, the technical controls for AI governance, and delivery performance. Because Burns & McDonnell runs multiple data and AI platforms (including Azure, AWS, GCP, Palantir, and Databricks), this hands-on technical leader brings working depth on each of them to drive consolidation into one delivery system. The Director delivers against the Shared Business Backlog and portfolio priorities set through the Operating Model & Strategy function, and commits technical capacity to those priorities.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field from an accredited program and a minimum of 15 years of related professional experience in data engineering, data platforms, integration, analytics engineering, AI/ML engineering, or related hands‑on technology disciplines, with a track record of building and shipping production data and AI solutions; substantial people‑leadership experience.
Experience leading enterprise‑scale data engineering/platform teams and multiple concurrent delivery streams in a complex organization.
Deep knowledge of modern cloud data architectures, ingestion/ELT/ETL, data modeling, orchestration, APIs/integration, CI/CD, observability, and production operations.
Hands‑on, current experience building and delivering production solutions on Azure, AWS, GCP, and Palantir (Foundry/AIP), and experience with Databricks, in enterprise environments. Burns & McDonnell runs these platforms today; this is a hands‑on technical leadership role, and management experience without hands‑on delivery experience on these platforms is not sufficient.
Hands‑on experience building ontologies, knowledge graphs, or semantic layers and the agentic AI solutions that run on them (for example Palantir Ontology and AIP), at both enterprise and local (portfolio) scale.
Experience implementing AI governance controls in production, including guardrails, evaluation, access control, and audit logging.
Working knowledge of AI/ML delivery patterns, MLOps/LLMOps, model/product lifecycle, responsible AI controls, and the data foundations required for AI at scale.
Strong experience managing internal talent and external partners/SIs, with accountability for capacity, quality, delivery, and technical standards.
Proven track record of hiring and retaining top technical talent and leading distributed, multi-location teams.
Strong stakeholder leadership with the ability to partner across business, IT, architecture, security, and executive teams.
Proven stakeholder engagement and delivery leadership: able to build and sustain senior business, IT, and executive relationships and reliably deliver committed technical outcomes end to end.
Proven ability to work directly with business customers in shaping value (defining outcomes, use cases, and success measures) and to deliver material, measurable impact to the business P&L by leveraging data.
Ability to deal with ambiguity: comfortable operating, deciding, and delivering in a fast‑evolving environment.
Preferred / Differentiating Experience
Experience in engineering, construction, EPC, professional services, or other project‑centric enterprises preferred.
Experience with data product, lakehouse/data fabric, metadata/catalog/lineage, and MDM patterns preferred.
Experience with AI governance, responsible AI controls, or enterprise technology governance preferred.
Experience managing AI consumption cost (FinOps), including usage visibility, cost allocation, and model selection trade‑offs preferred.
Relevant cloud, data engineering, or AI certifications preferred.
This job posting will remain open a minimum of 72 hours and on an ongoing basis until filled.
