Job description

Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a dedicated and experienced dentist to manage the Community Care dental program. This position offers a unique opportunity to improve dental care access for Veterans by building and refining external provider relationships that deliver timely, high-quality care when VA capacity is limited.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry from an approved school
  • Residency: Completed or currently completing a residency in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience
  • License: Currently hold or will hold a full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)
  • Preferred Experience: Completion of a GPR or AEGD program, or 5 years' clinical experience, with preference for VA or public health experience
Additional Qualifications
  • Knowledge of VA Community Care policies and dental eligibility
  • Experience managing dental referrals or working within managed care or public health
  • Familiarity with VA electronic health records (e.g., CPRS, VistA, Cerner)
  • Experience with quality assurance and performance improvement
Physical Requirements
  • Light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds
  • Reaching, pushing, and pulling activities
  • Use of fingers, both hands required
  • Walking and standing for specified durations
  • Visual and hearing requirements
Duties

This is an open continuous announcement, remaining open until July 30, 2025, or until all positions are filled. The first cut-off date is July 11, 2025. Applications received after this date will be considered as vacancies occur. Applicants will remain active for three months after initial application and must update their application to remain under consideration.

The dentist will oversee activities related to community care consult processing for outpatient dental care outsourced to community providers. Responsibilities include clinical care coordination, adherence to policies, managing referrals, and providing direct patient care, including examinations, diagnoses, and various dental procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Telework is ad-hoc as per agency direction. This is not a virtual position.
