Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a qualified Dental Hygienist to deliver routine dental hygiene care under the supervision of the attending dentist. Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited School of Dental Hygiene.
• Work experience may not substitute for the education requirement.
• Current Dental Hygiene License from the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners required.

Responsibilities

• Performs dental cleanings, scaling, and routine dental hygiene procedures.
• Performs root planing, curettage, polishing, application of sealants, and fluoride treatments as directed and within scope of practice.
• Takes, develops, and mounts dental radiographs (X-rays) as necessary.
• Educates patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and preventive dental care.
• Assists the attending dentist during patient examinations and dental procedures.
• Maintains accurate patient records, treatment documentation, and other required records.
• Performs administrative and clerical duties in support of department operations, as needed.
• Provides appropriate care and responds to the unique needs of patients from newborn through geriatric populations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Description

Under general supervision of the attending dentist and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Dental Hygienist provides routine dental hygiene care to patients. Responsibilities include dental cleanings, scaling and root planning, curettage, use of Cavitron equipment, polishing, application of sealants, fluoride treatments, and dental radiographs.

The Dental Hygienist also provides patient education regarding proper oral hygiene practices, maintains accurate patient records and documentation, and may perform administrative and clerical duties in support of department operations.

This position provides care to patients across the lifespan, from newborn through geriatric populations, and requires the ability to respond appropriately to the unique needs of each patient.
