Description

General Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Dental Director or designated Dentist, you will be responsible for providing quality treatment and preventive oral health care to the patients of Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center, Inc (WYH). Services may include assessment of oral health conditions, dental charting, taking and developing dental radiographs, removing calculus and plaque, applying preventative material to teeth, and other responsibilities as appropriate to the profession and as outlined in the WYH Collaborating Agreement.

Specific Responsibilities

• Record and update the medical history of patients.
• Examine patients, report abnormalities or medical concerns to the dentist before proceeding with oral prophylaxis.
• Perform oral prophylaxis and fluoride treatments.
• Remove calculus, accretions, and stains, including scaling and planning of exposed root surfaces as indicated for complete prophylaxis.
• Provide dental health education to patients on an individual basis.
• Take necessary dental radiographs, properly expose, process, and mount the films.
• Assist in dental and periodontal assessments to aid diagnosis and provide dental hygiene services.
• Polish teeth, including existing restorations.
• Assess the oral and maxillofacial area to aid diagnosis by the dentist.
• Take impressions for study cases.
• Record dental charting, treatment, patient education, and progress notes in the Dental Record, ensuring all entries are authenticated with time, date, and signature. Use EMR as needed.
• Create dental claims on EMR.
• Follow Medicaid guidelines and provide treatment accordingly.
• Disinfect and sterilize instruments, maintain a clean and orderly treatment area following infection control procedures.
• Assist the Dental Administrative Assistant with the patient recall system.
• Screen urgent care and emergency walk-in patients and take necessary radiographs.
• Maintain operatory Infection Control Logs and supplies.
• Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities within the Dental Department.
• Attend staff meetings and demonstrate excellent customer service.
• Communicate effectively regarding HIPAA, corporate compliance, and client confidentiality.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited dental hygiene school, currently licensed and registered in New York State, with one or more years of work experience.
