Description of the Job

This position requires possession of a license and current registration to practice dental hygiene in New York State.

Additional Information

This role is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). During the program, this position may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required, but candidates must meet minimum qualifications. After one year of permanent appointment, employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their employment status converted to competitive, with rights and privileges of competitive class employees. Employees can participate in promotion examinations for which they are qualified while serving in this role.

Job Duties

The Dental Hygienist will work in the Article 16 Dental Clinic across multiple locations to support approximately 500 individuals across a 10-county area. Responsibilities include performing oral examinations, prophylactic work, assisting dentists, and performing services in accordance with Section 6606 of the NY State Education Law. Computer skills and travel to satellite locations are required.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities include removing deposits and stains, applying topical agents, removing cement, placing/removing rubber dams, sutures, matrix bands, providing patient education, applying topical medications, taking dental x-rays, fluoride and anesthetic applications, polishing teeth, taking medical histories, charting, and other dental procedures. The role also involves administrative tasks such as filing, chart management, and communication with patients and staff. Travel to other clinics may be required.
