Summary

This position is to perform advanced prophylactic dental treatment for patients of all ages and periodontal treatment for patients with related medical and dental problems such as diabetes, cardiac complications, severe caries, and periodontal disease. The incumbent reports to a Supervisory Dentist.

Duties
  1. Complete screening procedures, interpret routine radiographs, and work with the dentist to complete examinations and treatment plans.
  2. Perform suture removal, change dressings, apply topical anesthetics, and provide home care instructions.
  3. Assist the dentist by making repairs and adjustments to the teeth, smoothing rough edges of restorations, removing overhanging margins of fillings, reducing sharp edges of fractured teeth, polishing and finishing amalgam restorations, and inserting temporary fillings.
  4. Perform oral prophylaxis and scaling/root planning, complete protective restorations, and administer local anesthesia.
  5. Provide community-based dental prevention programs, including education, oral hygiene instructions, nutritional counseling, fluoride application, and sealant placement.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment include a probationary/trial period, U.S. Citizenship, Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959, compliance with immunization requirements, maintaining medical staff privileges, passing E-Verify, setting up direct deposit, and undergoing background checks.

Qualifications

To qualify, your resume must demonstrate relevant experience and/or education. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer, and part-time work, with clear duties and hours specified.

Basic licensure as a dental hygienist in the U.S. or its territories is required. For radiologic procedures, compliance with specific credentialing standards is necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

GS-07: 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level or equivalent.

GS-08: 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent, including performing advanced procedures and interpreting X-rays.

Education

Must have an accredited dental hygiene program. Unofficial transcripts are accepted; official transcripts are required after selection. Foreign education requires a foreign credential evaluation.

Additional Information
