Job description

Summary

This position is to perform advanced prophylactic dental treatment for patients of all ages and periodontal treatment for patients with related medical and dental problems such as diabetes, cardiac complications, severe caries, and periodontal disease. The incumbent reports to the Supervisory Dentist.

Duties
  1. Complete screening procedures, interpret routine radiographs, and work with the dentist to complete examinations and prepare treatment plans.
  2. Perform suture removal, change dressings, apply topical anesthetics, and provide home care instructions.
  3. Assist the dentist by making repairs and adjustments to the teeth, such as smoothing rough edges of restorations, removing overhanging margins, reducing sharp edges of fractured teeth, polishing amalgam restorations, and inserting temporary fillings.
  4. Perform oral prophylaxis and scaling/root planning, complete protective restorations, and administer local anesthesia.
  5. Provide community-based dental prevention programs, including education, oral hygiene instructions, nutritional counseling, fluoride application, and sealant placement.

Requirements

Conditions include a probationary period, U.S. Citizenship, registration with Selective Service if applicable, immunizations, licensure, background checks, and maintaining medical staff privileges.

Qualifications

Experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. For GS-07, one year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level is required; for GS-08, one year at the GS-07 level with relevant duties.

Education

Must have a degree from an accredited program and licensure as a dental hygienist. Submit transcripts with your application.
