Job Purpose

Dental Hygienists conduct initial patient screenings, clean teeth (e.g., remove plaque), advise patients on oral health and preventative care, assist dentists with treatment planning, and handle dental emergencies.

Duties And Responsibilities

1. Conduct patient screening procedures, including assessment of oral health, review of health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting, perio-charting, and taking blood pressure and pulse.
2. Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays).
3. Perform local anesthesia and administer nitrous oxide.
4. Remove calculus and plaque from all tooth surfaces.
5. Apply preventive materials such as sealants and fluorides.
6. Educate patients on oral hygiene practices and nutritional counseling.
7. Make impressions of teeth for study casts.
8. Identify conditions like gingivitis, caries, or periodontitis.
9. Prepare operatories by sterilizing instruments and arranging equipment.
10. Schedule patient appointments and monitor dental supplies.
11. Maintain documentation and perform office management tasks.
12. Operate efficiently with an assistant if applicable.
13. Support dentists and staff as needed.
14. Ensure OSHA and HIPAA compliance.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Associate degree or higher from an accredited dental hygiene program.
• State-certified dental hygienist license.

Preferred Expanded Functions

• Local anesthesia administration.
