Job description

Summary

The Dental Hygienist provides direct patient care under the general supervision of the dentist and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision. It is expected that they provide direct patient care and receive guidance from higher-level or supervisory staff members for only the most complex patients.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
2. Education: Applicants must possess an Associate degree or higher from an accredited dental hygiene program. The degree must have been obtained from an institution accredited at the time of completion. Approved programs include those accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed equivalent to U.S. programs and enable sitting for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.
3. Licensure/Certification: Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in the U.S. or its territories. Certification in radiologic procedures is required per federal standards, with exceptions for non-certified applicants who meet eligibility requirements and are appointed temporarily.
4. Foreign Education: Education outside the U.S. must be deemed equivalent by a recognized organization.
5. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, candidates are evaluated based on experience and demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) for each grade level from GS-5 to GS-9, with specific KSAs outlined for each grade.

Duties

• Operate within a Whole Health System of care, promoting personalized health plans for Veterans.
• Provide excellent customer service, patient care, and education.
• Perform dental prophylaxis, periodontal maintenance, and other clinical procedures.
• Assist with dental imaging, infection control, and clerical tasks.
• Maintain patient safety and confidentiality, participate in employee education, and adhere to safety regulations.

Work Schedule: Thursday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Telework is not available. This position is not virtual. No relocation or recruitment incentives are authorized.
