Job summary

Rhode Island Hospital is seeking a dental coder to assign CDT codes for dental encounters under supervision and to analyze patient records for accurate coding. This role supports billing accuracy and serves as a resource for staff on coding and billing practices.

Responsibilities include consulting manuals, coordinating with dentists, entering data into Dentrix, auditing charges, and resolving billing issues while adhering to AHIMA, CMS and ADA guidelines.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Training in CDT coding, anatomy, physiology, and dental terminology.
• Experience with Dental software, preferably Dentrix.
• Knowledge of PC skills in Windows and dental billing routines.
• Courteous telephone technique and good customer service skills.
• Interpersonal skills to interact with patients and outside agencies.

Responsibilities

• Review dental record documents and patient encounter forms to identify and assign diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Reference coding manuals to ensure accurate billing codes.
• Apply sequencing guidelines per AHIMA, CMS and ADA directives.
• Contact dentists and other health care professionals to obtain missing or ambiguous information.
• Enter coding/billing information into the Dentrix system.
• Create paper invoices as needed.
• Review revenue reports to reconcile charges on patient ledgers.
• Research missing charges and corrections in the billing system.
• Interact with patients and Patient Financial Services to resolve billing issues.
• Perform regular audits to ensure documentation completeness and compliance.
• Report inconsistencies to the Administrative Coordinator.
• Serve as a resource to staff for coding and billing questions.
• Maintain knowledge of outpatient compliance and reimbursement policies.
