Pima Medical Institute is seeking a Dental Assistant Substitute Instructor for its San Antonio campus on an as-needed basis. Pima Medical Institute is seeking a flexible, engaging Dental Assistant Substitute Instructor to join our San Antonio campus faculty team on an as-needed (PRN) basis.
In this key substitute role, you will step in during morning sessions (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM) to deliver lectures, lead practical chairside demonstrations, and evaluate clinical competencies when regular faculty members are away. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to mentor future dental assistants and give back to the profession while maintaining flexible teaching hours.
Substitute Instruction & Practical Labs:
Lesson Delivery: Step in as needed to deliver tailored lesson plans and conduct didactic and practical lab instruction utilizing diverse teaching methods to accommodate varied learning styles.
Clinical Skills & Safety: Demonstrate four-handed and six-handed dentistry practices, chairside procedures, infection control, and equipment operation while enforcing classroom and lab safety guidelines.
Competency Evaluation: Grade student practicals, classwork, and assignments within 72 hours of submission using standard answer keys and evaluation criteria.
Academic & Program Support:
Documentation & Attendance: Complete required student documentation promptly, including attendance, early alerts, and incident reports.
Student Guidance: Address academic or behavioral concerns in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Faculty and Student Services Coordinator.
Campus Engagement: Attend faculty meetings, in-service events, and advisory board meetings when scheduled during coverage periods.
Education & Training:
Graduation from an accredited Dental Assistant program recognized by USDE or CHEA (or equivalent recognized hospital/international program); OR
Minimum of three (3) years of job-related training and experience in dental assisting for non-graduates.
Occupational Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of practical, hands‑on clinical experience in dental assisting.
Licensure & Credentials:
Nationally Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), or Licensed Dentist (Dentists exempt from CDA/RDA credential).
Active Texas state registration/credential required by law to work as a Dental Assistant.
Clinical Competency: Proficient in four-handed and/or six-handed dentistry practices and knowledgeable regarding Texas state requirements for dental assisting programs.
Technical Skills: Strong verbal and written communication; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Google Workspace.
Hiring Range: $20.80 to $24.90 per hour.
Schedule: As-Needed / Substitute (Morning shift availability, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM).
