Department Information

The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. Over the past 140 years, we've become a national leader in preparing oral health professionals, conducting innovative research that has an impact on patients and the profession, and providing patient-centered care.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with an interest in working with adult populations with either intellectual and/or developmental disabilities as well as adults with medical complexity. This may include but is not limited to patients with behavioral or sensory challenges in the dental environment as well as adults with medical diagnoses resulting in physical or emotional changes, and a time sensitive need for dental support. Along with dental assisting expertise, we encourage the applicant to consider working in a fast paced but rewarding environment.

Job Summary
  • Takes impressions and bite registrations
  • Takes, develops and mounts x-rays. Instruct students on taking x-rays
  • Fits preliminary crowns for adjustments, creates custom temporary restorations and places temporary restorative material in teeth
  • Makes and fabricates temporary crown and adjust and cement
  • Places and removes matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations
  • Places resin and amalgam restorations. Finishes and polishes restorations and adjust patient bite
  • Performs expanded dental assistant functions and demonstrates correct procedures to students
  • Sits chair side to pass instruments and supports direct patient care as indicated by procedure
  • Confirms that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organizes them for procedures and/or surgery
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting training program AND 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty OR,
  • 2 years of dental assisting experience AND Completion of an accredited dental assisting training program AND 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Indiana X-Ray License upon date of hire
  • Expanded Functions Dental Assisting License if working in an expanded dental assisting capacity upon date of hire
  • Dental Assistant Certification if working in a dental assisting specialty capacity upon date of hire
  • DAANCE if working in an anesthetic capacity upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$20.50 - $25 per hour based on experience.
