Job description

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs direct and indirect patient care procedures as well as general clinical and support tasks, as specifically delegated or directed by the supervising dentist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Takes and records patient health history and vital signs; performs radiography, dental laboratory procedures, inmate dental health orientation, and education.
  2. Provides assistance in preventive, periodontic, restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, and oral surgery procedures; records clinical observations, treatment information, and data.
  3. Maintains general clinic orderliness and cleanliness; performs sterilization and disinfection of instruments and equipment. Maintains inventory of instruments, needles, and all hazardous materials stored and used in the dental clinic, including logs for tracking and control purposes.
  4. Operates personal computers to enter and assimilate data, generate reports, draft routine correspondence, and develop administrative analyses upon request.
  5. Performs administrative support duties involving the exercise of independent judgment under general supervision, including filing, routing calls, correspondence, mail, scanning, emailing, and faxing information.
  6. Uses data entry systems to manage daily sick call requests and schedule appointments; prepares impressions and packages for the Dental Laboratory; maintains a tracking log for prosthetic cases.
  7. Receives, stores, distributes, and maintains inventory levels for the dental department; processes requisitions, work orders, and supply requests; returns expired or unused inventory; checks contents against invoices and purchase orders, reporting discrepancies.
  8. Maintains an inventory of all dental equipment.
  9. Adheres to internal controls and reporting structures established for the department.
  10. Performs related duties as required.
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs additional duties as needed and provides coverage outside of normal assignments on an as-needed basis.
EQUIPMENT:

Standard office and dental clinic equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Located within a prison, jail, or juvenile detention center. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are required. May be required to provide dental assistance at multiple facilities.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Current and maintained dental assistant registration with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Current CPR certification.

Salary is commensurate with relevant work experience.
